Why is it so difficult for Israel to target Iranian nuclear sites?

They don’t need to destroy the buried enrichment facilities. They just need to deny access and try to kill the existing personnel. Why not just destroy the entrances? Maintain surveillance over the site to identify any hidden access points for follow up targeting. If they try to gain entrance again, target the construction site (and try to kill any personnel working on it). Autonomous anti personnel and anti material drones could also be deployed on site to harass people trying to gain entrance.

You could use cruise or ballistic missiles for this. You wouldn’t be trying to drop bunker busters.

I meant for targeting entrances. Autonomous small drones for vehicle targeting could be brought in with cruise missile, smuggled in, or dropped by plane. A few thousand would cause a lot of problems for anyone trying to make use of the facility.

There is a hole in the earth that vehicles and personel have to pass through to gain entrance. This can’t be buried. If it gets turned into rubble, how do they get in?

Small drones have limited air time and can be easily neutralized if you know their location.
You need like a Predator drone to do continuous loitering of the entrances. Then you need combat air patrol to protect them against other aircraft or to suppress air defense systems
This is a retarded idea, on par with XO's "genius" idea of pumping seawater into Gaza tunnels

I wasn’t thinking about loitering drones. I was thinking ones that would land and run a low power motion detection for extended periods. Once an event is triggered, they would then attack or signal other units to do so. You could easily build units that surveil areas for months. Once batteries are depleted, replace them with new units.
The obstacle the Iranians have is that entrances are precious, easily observed and can’t be rebuilt faster than they are destroyed.

What are the chances the Iranians will figure this out? You could prob pull this off once and then they'll have every goatherder out in the desert sweeping the place constantly for drones in low power mode.
This is like the pager attack; it probably works once, maaaybe twice (depending on how retarded the OpSec of the recipients are)
Also with regards to destroying "precious" entrances. If there's anything the Iranians dont have a shortage of is illiterate workers to clear shit up and build the entrance again

Obviously it would be a major priority to eliminate the drones but there is an issue of scalability. Small drones are cheap and be manufactured at scale. If you just want something that can kill a person, a few grams of a shaped charge delivered to the head will do. You are probably looking at a few hundred dollars to maybe a thousand per kill if you wanted to litter the landscape with small anti personnel drones that would be activated by motion sensing command units. The Israelis could create a real hassle for them reasonably cheaply. It’s a flying minefield.

I was thinking you would create a GPS fence. The units are programmed to stay within a defined area around the enrichment facility and kill everyone in it. I was also thinking about a diversity of units here - some anti personnel and some anti material. The drones would communicate between themselves to assign targeting, using radio frequency hopping channels or laser communication links. You could make this completely autonomous or have units that are able to communicate information back to the Israelis to identify entrance information (assuming satellite surveillance is insufficient for that). I think the technology is there to create a real headache for them.
It make sense to deploy something like this against their other military bases. I don’t think most countries would respond well to a surprise mass attack with autonomous lethal drones.

The US military itself builds underground now. Everywhere we build out, we build down. We do this to protect our shit. We believe it works.
If you ask are military to asses the situation, they're going to rattle off a thousand reasons why digging works. They're not going to say "it works everywhere besides Iran."

It works to protect what is inside but it doesn’t stop someone from sealing it up. It’s a tunnel. Tunnels can be made to collapse.
