It would be interesting to ask him with truth serum if he'd rather have his critic career, or if he'd rather have written say 5 good movies, gotten 1 Oscar nomination, and died in relative obscurity after living a middle class lifesytle.

He was the greatest movie reviewer of all time imho.
Whenever I watch a movie from like 1970 to 2010 I’ll look up his review of this film. I always learn something. His zero-star reviews are laugh-out-loud funny. Also he’s not afraid to praise pop schlock if it’s well-made and does what it set out to do.
That said I think he’d choose being a middling screenwriter. These guys are always frustrated creatives.
