Endless shaky cam masking poor cinematography, dull gray visual colors used, endless stupid cuts to corn fields representing dreams, bad music

I remember watching the trailer for it when it came out and being excited, then being let down when it was so shitty

A good version of this film would have cut out all the dream stuff, had brighter colors, better music, and far far far better cinematography with no shaky cam

Funny how it became a venerated xo classic

I don’t mean this as a hot take either

Caveat: only saw this stinker once when it came out, it’s been 20 years or whatever

they put so much work into the casting and the stunting and the set design and the cinematography and the script that you have to be a total wet blanket to whine about shit like that. movies like spartacus have a very post-2014 feel to them in that the actors are blatantly just famous overgrown children.

It didn't suck but it did feel like it ran long. It's still an all-time great "guy movie"/"Loser guy movie." How much screentime does Joaquin Phoenix eat up with his incest? Feels like a lot iirc.

You could easily edit out 20 minutes but its otherwise a perfectly plotted and acted movie with A+ dialogue and good to great action and a great score

Some people like that (I do), whereas others like beautiful movies like Interstellar even if they have forgetable characters and make less than zero sense.
