The fact linguists were never able to build anything remotely as capable as ChatGPT (even in narrow domains like translation) should do a lot to diminish their credibility compared to ML people. Date: July 27th, 2025 8:35 AM Author: cucumbers ..except linguistics is a core part of most AI systems, since its theories and concepts are used to parse text, construct sentences with proper grammar, etc. Also Chomsky himself predicted that the computationally-intense techniques of what eventually came to be known as ML/AI would be the only way to handle problems like translation because linguistics and science in general lack any fundamental understanding of how thought works.
