EDH became a popular casual format and then WotC began supporting it ("Commander"); this is now the dominant form, and the four person nature of the game means that it has all sorts of dumb shitty "Rule 0" "let people enjoy things" energy coming in.
At the same time, Hasbro realized that it could print money by doing licensing deals with other IP. The LotR set was actually 180 (because it's in keeping with the fantasy setting) but now we have Fallout and Marvel and so on.
Premodern offers something of a Reprieve but it's a little too sweaty.
