SF is always going to be expensive due to nice weather and proximity to Silicon Valley combined with being located on a narrow peninsula with almost nowhere to build. But this type of tax will hopefully nudge things in the right direction.
Plus my recollection is that the tax was too narrow. I think it only applied to multi-family properties or something like that, and almost nobody is buying an apartment building and then leaving it empty. They need to apply the same tax to Chinese and Saudi billionaires who buy mansions on Nob Hill. |

That would greatly reduce the number of people who don't want to move because they would lose their rock bottom pandemic mortgage rate. It wouldn't fix the housing affordability issue by itself, but it would help a lot at basically zero cost.
Other than that, we just need to keep building housing. The market will get back into equilibrium eventually. |

Then you have the HIGHLY RESTRICTIVE zoning laws that make it even less profitable to build. It's harder to make a profit when each new home has to be built on 2 acres of land. |

Mortgage backed bonds or pass through securities, for instance, don't serve that purpose because they are much more directly tied to the value of the physical asset (and there's more immediate presentation of risk -- not as repackaged) so those should be allowed to remain. This would get rid of the lock-in effect and get a lot more properties on the market.
