"I managed to talk to my close friend in Iran a few minutes ago and got first-hand, accurate, non-hyped information about the conditions. I’m sharing part of the chat here with locations removed.
1. The national internet is half-connected. Meaning only one or two apps related to schools, universities, and banks work. Many internal messengers (e.g., Eita & Baleh are out of reach).
2. @Starlink is the one and only way to communicate with outside (@elonmusk). No configuration or VPN works on this half-connected national net (e.g., even @windscribecom). Some companies have Starlink. If someone in Iran is connected via Starlink, they must communicate only with trusted, close contacts abroad and must not let strangers find out (@netblocks).
3. A semi-military rule is in place. From 8 p.m. onward, leaving neighborhoods is not allowed. People of each neighborhood gather within their own area from 8 to 10pm. Police do nothing against gatherings and chants, but if they see movement within the crowd, they respond violently and harshly. My friend witnessed gunfire up close.
4. Most people in Iran have not seen the videos of Kahrizak Forensic Center in Tehran (x.com/vahid/status/2…) because they have no internet and no messenger apps are working.
5. People are truly empty-handed. The situation is not such that they can go seize state TV. From 8 to 10 p.m., everyone stays in their own neighborhood. Everyone is waiting to see how possible aid might unfold (@MarioNawfal; @LucasFoxNews).
6. Most people inside the country currently have no political preference. First comes fear for their lives, then the pain of bread. Whoever helps them will be welcomed.
