It's true, brother. I remember the 90s growing up being carefree and feeling safe playing in my neighborhood. No politics in school or camp, the world was catering to families everywhere (for example Vegas was really pushing the family vibe throughout the 90s), and the internet/video games were still innovative but not too corporate. I can't imagine growing up in the hellscape of 2022. I'm trying my hardest to give my kids the 90s experience growing up. I loved my childhood/high school experience. I look back with significant nostalgia (although I am a VERY nostalgic person in general).

When I was growing up there was an expectation that families would have dinner together. I distinctly remember having dinner at my friend’s house. They would sit down and have dinner together at the dinner table and they would always have iced tea, which we didn’t have at my house. I kind of followed that friend a bit. His mom died of breast cancer when he was in high school and then a couple years later his younger sister died from an overdose. No idea what happened to him in the 15ish years since then.

Another kid who I sometimes hung out with on the other end of the street also died at 17/18 from an overdose.

Honestly, that street was a lot like the street from The Kids Aren’t Alright by The Offspring.

It was a pretty good time, but it should be pointed out that nobody was fucking because AIDS was still a death sentence and we were all terrified. I sometimes wish I had gone to college after antiretrovirals were more widely available. It probably would have been much easier to get laid. Of course, surveys say that Gen Z is fucking less than any previous generation, so maybe it was still better when we were afraid of AIDS.

You can make the same list for basically any year from 1965-1970. 1967 has Cobain, Pam Anderson, Julia Roberts, The Rock, Will Ferrell and Vanilla Ice. 1965 has Dr Dre, Chris Rock, RDJ, Ben Stiller and Michael Bay.

Also, when did society decide that it is child abuse for your kid to leave the house alone before age 16? Honestly, to me, that would be the worst part about growing up today. I remember riding my bike to school by myself when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. It was a short ride with almost no traffic in a safe community, and we were fine. During the summer, we would ride our bikes to the video arcade or the baseball card shop (which were probably 2-3 miles away from home) or sometimes to the creek, after which we would float home on inner tubes. It was 180^180. If parents let their 8-year-old kids do that today, they would get locked up for neglect and the kids would end up in the foster system. I wish policymakers would stop blaming skyrocketing teen depression rates on social media and figure out that maybe it isn't healthy to force kids to be prisoners in their own homes until they are old enough to drive.
