It mocks the absurdity/hypocrisy of megachurch culture to some degree, but the protagonists are all 3 dimensional characters with sympathetic qualities
I think the religious services it shows are actually the most fascinating part of the show, in that they nail the ridiculous spectacle of megachurches while also showing the genuinely powerful and moving parts of that spectacle. . . like in the last ep, McBride comes out and gives a fairly insightful sermon on Judas and his suffering that is presented basically without any level of irony
It's the type of show only someone from outside of hollywood could make IMO - McBride/Hill/Green actually grew up in NC |

They are explicitly bemoaning the fact that proles in your part of the country prefer a more WWF style service that your pastor is either unable or unwilling to provide. But even within that framework they still manage to sketch out how a genuine faith community still provides value and spiritual leadership in spite of generations of pollution by the most base elements of popular culture. As was mentioned above, there is a reading of the show as a vehement brief in support of Christianity, specifically Southern Christian traditions, in spite of the various ways that certain kinds of church leaders have strayed from/perverted/betrayed the teachings of Christ.

Thought they did a good job showing some of the absurdity of mega church culture without being too mean spirited or snarky. Church stuff was more of a background to showcase the characters and family anyway.
Walton Goggins is a really underrated actor. Crushed it in vice principles and Baby Billy was absurd and hilarious. He crushed it again. |
