Buddy and I cruised around there for a couple of days in sherut taxis (20-yo Mercs), I recall also seeing a lot of huge billboard portraits of Khomeini and other similar looking Iranian mullah types

180. It’s very interesting being an area that’s occupied by a rebel terrorist group, as opposed to even Iran where the terrorists are actually the government

yeah, also a little bit like Transnistria in Moldova that way, very entertaining to travel around there

nice little town Baalbek, we stayed in some magnificent old mansion fallen on hard times for maybe a couple of bucks a night

you know how there's a big hill / small mountain near Baalbek, with some communications station with huge antennas on the peak (at least there used to be)? less than a week after we were there, the Israeli air force flew over and levelled the whole thing LJL. they probably rebuilt it

ljl

yeah even though it was long ago I actually remember eating very well there

the Lebs have great food, such a shame their country has become so fucked up, I can't foresee going back there

hey I have a question for you

you and I have occasionally talked travel many times over the years under my various nondescript monikers and I've enjoyed it

I know you've got young kids and a family and that changes everything, but I'm guessing not forever - at what age will you start taking the kids on the road?

good question. we haven't taken the kids ANYWHERE - even a weekend trip. it just sounds like a miserable waste of time and money, and incredibly stressful.

i guess it depends on maturity but i can see kids enjoying a kid-friendly trip to some safe third world place like SE asia or eastern europe or something when they're like 6 and 8. we'd have to keep the days short and also they're not gonna like museums or nature or walking around cities or anything, so i'm not sure what we'd even do.

i feel like 10-12 is the minimum age where they'd be able to somewhat appreciate and understand where they are.

makes sense just to leave them at the grandparents for the foreseeable future.

you?

that seems right, but I suppose it also depends on the kids’ personalities? a 6-yo can be happy and interested but a 12-yo can be surly and difficult

my brother and I were both mostly calm and happy kids and my parents took us on trips pretty early, when we were very young to resort type places (think Club Med) that were geared to looking after kids in play groups while the parents spent the day looking around Sicily or wherever, I remember those trips very fondly so I must have had a great time as a kid

yeah it definitely defends on personalities. i was a dork and was interested in history shit at 10-12. my brother couldnt have given a fuck about history even when he was in high school and we went to greece when he was like 15 and he refused to go into the parthenon because it was too hot and said its just a fucking rock and went back to the hotel alone.... he's almost 40 and he'd do the same thing today.

in this day and age, would you really trust leaving your kid in some random play group in some third world shithole? i'd barely trust it in the US. times were different int he 80s and 90s.
