He probably should have cut and run at that point, but instead he made the fatal mistake of throwing that punch. When he failed to connect, that's when he finally made the decision to get out of town, but it was too late.
The question is why did he throw the punch? Was it just bad judgment, or did he have reason think hoodie man was gonna shoot anyway, and he thought this was his chance to disarm him. That's my guess as to what occurred. Hoodie man had his right hand up in the air, nowhere near his hip. If that punch had connected it would have done the trick.
