until someone wrote it down 1,200 years later. Now you think it was always just a book. For that matter you've never read the whole thing

i have read it 3 times, so your poast is untrue.

i had a survey class on the epic in college. we read the iliad, the odyssey, the aeneid, don quixote, ulysses (joyce), and some poem called omeros by a negroid poet.

i'd read it once before that for pleasure, and i read it once since then.

So you're saying it's every bit as HIP HOP as In the Heights or even Hamilton?! Which is quintessentially part of the brown queer experience!

It's easier to teach a kid to sing the lyrics to a song than to teach him to read and write. 1999 is a song we all heard as kids and we can also recite a good chunk of the lyrics better than we can recite shit we read in a book at any age

That's the power of using song, meter and rhyme to preserve oral tradition. It's also a form of error-checking that prevents anyone from tampering with the lyrics. That's why Homer was preserved during the 400 years Greek people went without writing.

You didn't have to love it to remember it. That's the point. Most people know songs from Mary Poppins and the Beatles too

Poetry was one of the highest Arts but now any mention of it will have you dubbed a Gay Loser. I think the Clique System originated as a sort of antidote subconsciously developed against the perceived existential threat of life-nullifying Poetry imo. Diskuss.

Greek and Latin poetry almost never rhymed. The meter was quantitative. Congratulations on learning the concept of oral poetry this week, though.

The Iliad is a redacted and edited performance text by an oral poet (Homer) consisting of a couple dozen of his most popular Homeric cinematic universe (Epic Cycle) set pieces. It was likely commissioned by an extremely rich/tyrannical fan who wanted other poets to be able to perform the pieces on demand. They used the newest tech for it: writing.

The Odyssey on the other hand was a written composition from the start by an Iliad fan-boy.

The rhyming and melody was only necessary to pass it down through the generations. That way people who didn’t even understand it could still memorize it just like people memorize songs they don’t know the meanings to. Once it was written down that was no longer necessary
