Each side hated the other, and I was constantly playing politics on both sides trying to make them happy. Had some weird arrangement that was like every Wednesday and every other weekend at my dad's house plus two weeks in the summer.
It was horrible shit. My mom was depressed my entire childhood. I remember being 12 or 13 trying to console my mom in an empty parking lot at 9pm after her boyfriend dumped her. |

In my wife's case, Mom is mentally ill and abusive, Father is completely codependent despite being verbally and physically abused throughout marriage. Children were largely sacrificed for Mom's needs.
While it made my wife very strong, self sufficient and driven. It also instilled very strong codependent tendencies and tons of trauma from years of abuse and a "healthy" parent who was unable to end the relationship for the health and safety of kids.
These patterns are now repeating in our own relationship leading us to separate/divorce.
I came from a family of alcholism with an enabling parent and not as bad but similar dynamic. I also have strong codependency as a result.
Wife and I love each other tremendously but our relationship is also incredible unhealthy and while we are currently separated I think the likely outcome is divorce as it's too easy for two codependents to backslide into unhealthy dynamics.
In our case, for sure her side, if her dad had divorced early on both kids would have turned out significantly more well adjusted and emotionally healthy then the environment they grew up in. |
