first you sign all the HR forms, then you're given a set of kneepads and, after that, there is a final tube of KY handed out with the verbal warning, "don't go too crazy with it, it's all you get for your first 3 months"

then the fun begins (translation: this is not a summer program)

I am in a niche practice. With that said, first years are typically sort of ignored for the first month or so. The learning curve is steep so they ease a first year into it. There is a lot of nonbillable work for the first year, and some pro bono work also. Typically, it is all the stuff that the more senior people don't want to deal with.

After the first two months, you start getting integrated into projects by being assigned very discrete issues to research and report back on.

Partners are generally nice, but make no mistake, they expect things to be correct and delivered on time. There is simply no excuse for sloppy research or lack of attention to detail. Writing styles always differ coming out of law school, so people generally expect that a first year will need some time to learn the best way to write for clients. But poor research or late assignments will be a deal-killer.

My first assignments were memos and smaller transactions where I worked directly with a 5th-year associate who was running the deal, and asked me to do all of the ancillary documents (board resolutions, disclosure schedules and such). Some first years were stuck on doc review/diligence right away. You might get lucky and be asked to do something substantive, like draft/negotiate a disclosure schedule or side agreement.

Your "mentor" may take you to lunch somewhere in the area. People are usually happy to see you and grateful for the extra manpower.

Life sucks by the second month.

My experience may be unusual, as I was slotted into a pretty particular practice group in IP based on my background, but I felt like I got a ton of attention/training/mentoring from partners and senior associates right from the first week. They had a number of assignments ready and waiting for me when I started, and they spent a ton of time getting me up to speed so i could do worthwhile work.

Edit: As the guy above said, they were happy to get the extra help and wanted me to be able to pitch in competently ASAP

I've been treated well so far, but im in bigregionallaw.

I've worked directly with a junior partner quite a bit and have gone out to lunch/drinks with partners a couple times.

Most people in our office leave by 7. I worked until 10:00 one day which is rare for our office and was bought drinks for doing so.

I am a first year in corporate, and so far my hours haven't been bad. I try to work 8:30-7 with a short lunch, and a couple days each week I work later to get assignments finished. I've worked with partners and senior associates, and a mix of billable and non-billable work. Managing to stay busy but not slammed. And praying to god I don't do something too stupid. For the most part everyone is civil and friendly--no screamers.

How many hours are you January starters billing?

Not sure I'd wish for that many hours, but struggling to bill 30-40 every week keeps making me nervous. I literally walk in the door most days with <2 hours of predictable billables, then wait for people to give me more assignments. Working so far, but a little too "on the edge" for my taste.

They treat me fine. I've had steady to busy levels of work but some it my class don't. It depends a lot on practice area and luck. No one yells. Biglaw is quite passive/aggressive. When they want you gone people stop giving you work and then they tell you you haven't met your hours and you move along. There's very little that's unpleasant about it if you will be here short term IMO. Hours suck sometimes but this is temporary for me.

It's a little weird because you will think quality work and solid analysis would put you on the fast track. You are wrong. The only thing that matters in life are typos. Typos decide cases and are the most important thing of all time.
