Also being ready and able to take the blame for nearly everything, even if it's not their fault. Like if you go to a party and the other dood can't remember your name, you apologize and make up some story like maybe you didn't properly introduce yourself last time, or didn't do enough to help him remember you, or you realize the split second where he can't remember and introduce yourself quickly to spare him the embarrassment of revealing that he's forgotten your name. People in the US can't do that shit for shit. |

Which confirms my belief that much of etiquette exists to cover up unpleasant truths, in this case, the truth that landing a man for marriage is considered a laudatory achievement for women in society. In other words, what we mean when we say "best wishes" to the woman is really "congratulations" and vice versa. |

- make a conscious effort to use correct grammar but resist temptation to sound stuffy and overly grand; do not correct another person's grammar unless teaching an english class
- avoid raising your voice, even in the most heated discussions
- "excuse me" *not* "i'm sorry"
- when you start a phone call, be the one to end it
- when it comes to social invitations, never wait for something better to come along. accept the first one
- ask "what do you think?" as often as possible, when getting to meet new friends
- small talk should be asking questions and not volunteering information about yourself
- when you feel you've been insulted respond by saying nothing at all. it is tcr
- a firm "no" and not "no, sorry" or anything else. just no
