If you are really going to clerk for the CAAF, maybe try and write something related to the UMCJ or CAAF for your first article. You need to give some reason to think you are more of an authority than the average shiteater 3L.
Rack up at least a couple publications in lesser journals (albeit from name schools whenever possible)... even if it's the irregularly published Stanford Journal of Shiteating and the Law.
Also, if you post it on SSRN and get a bunch of downloads, that's a major plus. |

Also, When you review potential papers for publication, do you confine yourself to Expresso? Some of the shit there is absolute garbage--the writing and analysis is just awful.
And how helpful is attach a professor recommending the article? |

50 downloads is good.
Professor recommending is better than no professor recommending, but not that big a deal unless it's a big name dude. If you attach a rec from Akhil Amar, you will get a shot. If you attach a rec from Professor Shiteater, it will be whatever.
The absolute best thing to do is to somehow get a prof from my school to recommend it. I guess this could be possible if you have a REALLY GOOD relationship with a prof and that prof would be willing to send it to a prof at my school and have that prof forward it to me in a "hey, check this out, thought you guys might be interested" e-mail. That will likely work a lot better with secondary journals at prestigious schools than LR itself though. |

First off, any competent selection committee would sense this topic is preempted as fuck. I'm assuming this guy is actually on the Vanderbilt Law Review, because I'm sure they're smart enough not to let something like this through otherwise.
When you use language this over the top on the same topic that say, Jeremy Waldron just wrote about, you come off just as overconfident as you undoubtedly are. I'm always on the lookout for this attitude when we receive submissions from young associates and students.
Sadly, certain members of our selection committee haven't such discriminating tastes. But those of us who do, also have the necessary cynicism to completely dismiss their opinions. Creates extra work for the trustable people but you gotta do... I think next year we'll have some litmus test for this in selecting the committee members. Perhaps we'll show them this retarded article and see what they think |

From my perspective, submissions from judges are the most attractive. I find the legal publication transaction abhorrent in that it's entirely disconnected from demand for legal scholarship (students exchange resume line for publication opportunity for professor so they can stay on tenure track so they can continue contributing to the cycle of job desperation that yields all these "subject-matter" journals in the first place), so true practice-oriented pieces get a real bonus from me. And remember, "practice-oriented" is extremely rare because who the fuck has time to read law review articles when they're actually a practicing atty. Of course, if you're going to trial in front of a judge who just published, it's gotta be per se malpractice not to read the piece.
My advice to you is to try to get your judge to co-author a piece. We've gotten submissions like this in the past. Sometimes it's bullshit, sometimes it's legit, but they always get extra attention from us. |
