in LS, fgt conlaw prof gave me one of the lowest grades in the class probably because i used to always show up 10 minutes late. it's way worse than all my other grades and fuckt my gpa. |

One letter grade is one GPA point. Distributed over 80 hours, 1/80, that lowers your total GPA by only .0125. That is not "fucking" your GPA bro. |

I had a conlaw class that req'd a paper. found out the prof was heavily involved with ACLU, so my paper was very lib-y. got A. its just bullshit that this stuff happens with "academics" |

1. I totally fucked up the midterm and first paper in a class (my own fault). The prof concluded that I was a fuckwit, so when I gave him a kind of complicated final paper topic, he steered me to a kind of retarded topic that you would give a high school kid. I expanded it a bit, wrote one of my better papers, turned it in, and went home. When grades came up, I got an Incomplete. I picked up my paper from his secretary and it had an A on it. I wrote to him and he told me to visit his office. He then interrogated me about the paper, how I wrote it, how I knew about X, etc. After about 15 minutes of me having no idea what he was talking about, he admitted that he thought I plagiarized but had no evidence for that other than that the paper was good. He changed the grade but handled the whole process like an asshole, which he was.
2. In a huge lecture class, I would sometimes read the textbook rather than listen to the prof (she wasn't adding a lot of value and this was before laptops in class). She called me out for that in the middle of class (seems like she was creating more distraction than I was). Then she fucked me on my first paper grade (it was actually decent) because she asked for 2 pages on "Compare and contrast Rome and Greece on 3 different axes" and I wrote 3.5 pages because how the fuck do you write that in 2 pages? I went to her office hours and asked totally reasonable questions like "How would you make this paper shorter?" and "What was wrong with the paper other than the length?" She flipped out and acted like I was one of those kids who had never gotten a grade below A and was whining for a boost, which I was not at all. Then when she came to my discussion section and was spouting nonsensical arguments, I started a huge debate with her rather than just smile and nod, which apparently was not part of her expectations for discussion section. At this point she called me in to meet with a dean, who was kind of like "why the fuck are we here?" but had to pretend to take it seriously. The only consequence the dean proposed was that the TA could grade any of my future work (they split the grading anyways) but in an effort to be reasonable I said that wouldn't be necessary. Due to good mid-term performance, I had a B+ at that point. I studied my ass off for the final and knocked it out of the park (I have always had a an accurate sense of this - when I felt like I fucked up a law school final the grade always came back bad). She gave me a B- for the course, when the entire grade was built of measured elements with no further discretion (10% paper, 20% test, etc.). I never talked to her again, although in hindsight I should have gone back to that dean. |

We went to a small lac and both majored in a dept. with only 4 faculty members. Hence, you spent a lot of time with the profs b/c they'd always invite you back to their office to shoot the shit.
The chair of the department used to play with himself with his hands in his pants pockets when female students would talk to him. One time in spring my gf went in to see him about some award she'd been given and he was doing his normal deal of playing pocket pool and when she left she said she noticed a big wet spot on his pant.
She was convinced he'd cum. I don't know b/c I wasn't there but she was really freaked out about it. I just thought it was pretty funny.
Also sort of made me want to be a prof.
Edit: Also, she was wearing a pretty short skirt that day and I'm reasonably sure that contributed to things. |

Well, for whatever reason, probably did not like our class, near the end of the term she said that we all had to take a 2 hr final and had some bullshit method of rebalancing it.
I promptly emailed the dean and everything was made right within a matter of hours. |

my initial grade was a 71/100. He gave me a 0/10 for formatting because I had, literally, one formatting mistake on my title page. His comments were that the title page was such a basic thing that any mistake was inexcusable. He gave me 0/15 on the grammar part for good measure, again because of the formatting mistake. He have me a near perfect score on the substantive issues, and said verbatim, "this would have been an A paper if not for the formatting mistakes."
Anyway, I went to him and asked him to reconsider, on the basis that (1) a 0/10 on formatting did not acknowledge the correct formatting I used throughout the rest of the paper, and (2) the most I could have lost due to improper formatting was 10 points. So he said, "you know what, youre right, maybe was too harsh. Let me take another look." The new grade was even lower; he gave me like 5 points for formatting, 7 points for grammar, and chopped like 20 points out ofthe substantive sections. it was one point above passing, and he was really fucking sarcastic about it, saying shit like "i admire you standing up for your work and hope you enjoy the new grade. You've earned it."

Thankfully I had the original paper with his original comments on them. I registered a complaint with his department chair and within the hour he was pretty much bribing me with a good grade in exchange for dropping the complaint. |

i) arbitrarily assigned attendance/participation grade. what actually seemed to matter is if you were loud in discussion. the loudest in the class were the graduate students, which made it more difficult for the rest of the class to participate. considering he never learned my name, i'm not sure why he thinks i deserved a 55/100 in this category when i was there for a much greater percentage of the time. and he should have known participation would be driven down when grad students were doing most of the talking.
ii) his 4 and 6 year old kids showed up in the middle of our mid-term and stayed for about 20 minutes. climbing everywhere and making noise, it was a real distraction. i seriously considered writing the dean. someone else told me they did.
iii) like what another poster said, he accused me of unoriginal work on my final paper after doing somewhat poorly on the midterm. he had no idea where i got my information from, writing that he thought i must have gotten it from somewhere online, and saying he basically couldn't fully accuse me of anything improper because i had a bibliography which was properly formatted and included all relevant studies. he said the whole research paper was like "a wikipedia style entry." still, he gave me an A-. he seemed angry in his notes.
iv) giving me an absolutely SPS grade on my final and claiming he had already discarded them when i wanted to take a look at his grading. |

Was doing Econ in undergrad and on track to get straight As in last two years (after fucking up first two years).
Took course in Economics of Environment or Ecology or some bullshit. Basically the professor would rant the whole class about crazy environmental theories like GMO causing autism and microwaves causing cancer. He would end each class with "but i'm not saying there's any evidence...I just want to inspire you to do the research."
Anyway the entire grade was based on a group presentation and my group put in substantial effort researching the harms from EM radiation (professor assigned topic). We basically said some EM can be carcinogenic in some cases and light pollution can affect migratory paths of insects but there is no evidence of power lines causing leukemia or cell phones causing tumors.
When pressed, he basically said our presentation didn't show him anything new (as if we were going to do some empirical study and find a smoking gun).
When further pressed, he would talk about how grades shouldn't matter because they feed into the income and consumption based economic paradigm that values GDP growth despite its unsustainability. Basically I think he knew his course was BS, he knew that he put 0 effort into lectures and taught absolutely nothing but didn't want people who took his class to get an easy A. I have a strong feeling everyone in the class got a straight up B and the prof saw this as some sort of rebellion against capitalism. |

Final exam next week: 4 hours, 3 questions, and 2 of those questions were from that last "fun" lecture which the prof "doubted" would be on the exam. Everyone got fucked. This was a higher-level applied math class and so it wasn't some essay exam that you could just BS your way through. Grades not curved because that's not how the real world works, or something. |

About 2 weeks before graduation I got an email that told me I could not graduate because I had not met reqs. Instantly called GC and asked to meet ASAP. We called dept. head (standard neo-feminist liberal arts type) who goes on a huge tirade about students trying to game the system and refuses to sign off on the waiver of the requirement. Keep in mind that I already had all my shit together to go to LS. As an aside, the GC starts sobbing loudly during this call, I think she felt guilty for suggesting that I take this route. At this point I am beyond pissed, so I go to this woman's office, (the inside of which resembles a house on that "Hoarders" show) and begin banging on the door. Now literally 3 minutes had passed since we spoke on the phone, and I could tell when she opened the door that she was not sure what to expect. Upon identifying myself, she tries to close the door but it pinches my rubber flip flop. She keeps pushing but the door won't close, so she thinks I am pushing back. She tells me that if I don't leave she is calling security, but there is no way I'm leaving w/ only one flip flop, so I shove the shit out of the door. Grab my flop and leave. I hear her pick up the phone, so I assume she called security, but I was parked pretty close and I left right away.
Long story short, I talked w/ the dean later that week and bring the GC w/ me. GC backs up my version of the events dealing w/ the requirement issue. Dean agrees to let me graduate, but says I can't walk @ graduation. Turns out that bitchass dept. head is the keynote speaker. LOL |

Didn't get fellowship. Fellowship director did mention that I should be more careful, in the future, of whom I ask for recommendations, and told me that he strongly advises against going to said professor again for a recommendation.

One semester, I had only ten minutes between two classes, and they were on opposite sides of campus. Both were required classes. I talked to the professor of the second class, and told him I would be about five minutes late for every class that semester, and told him why. He said he understood, and that it was fine.
End of the semester, I had an F, even though I got an average of A or A- in all my work. I emailed the prof, and he said it was because I didn't attend a single class. I thought that maybe he had me mixed up with someone else, because I sat in the front row and participated a lot. I went to his office so he could see my face, and he once again said that I had not attended one class. I was baffled.
I had to go over his head. Dean asked me to get signatures from my classmates saying they had seen me in class. I had to go around the last week of the term, explaining the situation to my classmates, and getting signatures. |

One said his course was graduate level and I had to "stop acting like a college freshman" (was a 4th year split undergrad/grad level course.) I didnt show up to about 70-80% of classes because it was a 10 am class and I slept in. After he yelled at me I rarely missed class although wouldn't always contribute in discussion. Got an A on essay, he said he was impressed and sent email saying he could appreciate why I needed more time to complete it (after I cited my excuse as being sick.) Ended up with an A- in course overall, patched things up with prof in end.
Same with other prof - she also wrote my reference but wasn't as pissed at me, more concerned and said she thought I may need to see a doctor if I had some issues preventing me from submitting anything on time ever, and missing all her classes. I basically said I was going thru "personal issues" that affected me and still use this excuse, got an A in course and said I was one of top students.
Thing is that I got along very well with most profs and TAs personally so 99% would give me extensions without any difficulty (although I'd still get B+ to A- grades generally, my school didn't give As easily.) These were the only 2 profs that got more upset. I think the worst was submitting a take-home exam *2 months* after the deadline but the prof just deducted half a letter grade, gave me B+ and I ended up as his thesis student. He was a cool dood.
