Don't avoid. It's a god place to learn litigation and you will get more training with the city than you will in sink or swim shitlaw. They get like 400 applications for every opening so don't bet on getting the job.

In court every single day covering motions. The city has its own part in each venue and it's always the same lawyers covering the city part so it's a rather small group of people who get to know each other pretty well. By this I mean it's the same couple dozen firms in each part all the time and the same lawyers from each firm. The city lawyers get mobbed by the P's and spend the entire morning writing up stips. By 2-3pm they are back in their offices to prep for the next day and to draft motions. Most motions are adjourned first time on because the city usually shows up with only 2 or 3 lawyers per part so the calendar calls are kind of a crazy circus for the city lawyers as they have many times more files on their plate than their opposition.

Medium sized PI shops I would imagine. You will definitely become a top 1% stip writer as you will spend obscene amounts of time begging people like me for 30 more days.

Not a terrible job, just appearance heavy especially for newbies who are going to start out in the motions part and not doing depositions on day 1.

People look down on it because entry levels start covering motions and covering motions in state court is basically monkey work. Oral arguments last about 60 seconds as most motions are discovery related. The judge who runs the city parts in Manhattan doesn't even do oral arguments. She reads her decision and asks for comments/objections. 95% of the time you will never enter an objection on the record. It's a cattle call part but outside of the commercial division most parts have that feel. The stip writing is harder than it sounds though because the language has to be right and opposing counsel will always try to slip shit in or try to get you to stip without getting a So Ordered stamp. You can almost wipe your ass with a stip that hasn't been So Ordered. You will also spend an obscene amount of time writing OP to absurdly bad shitlaw motions drafted by moron Touro grads who have no clue what they are doing. Between the incompetents you have to deal with and the assholes trying to fuck you inexperienced ass constantly the job will wear on you, and traveling from home to court and then to office every day is tiring. It's 2 extra commutes. Biglaw types generally don't have daily appearances. If you stay around long enough you will start to do depos and real trial work though, but you start out dealing with shit motions.

9-6ish I would imagine as very few jobs of any import are really 9-5.

Stips = stipulations. The city shows up to a part with 2 or 3 lawyers each assigned to cover say 40 motions a morning. The first time on motions are adjourned almost by default because the court cant handle that much shit or it can but it understands that the city lawyers can't. The city lawyers try to stip out as many motions as possible to avoid having to argue them. A lot of the motions are over blown discovery deadlines so the P's will agree to give the city 30 more days to produce X or the city's answer will be stricken, and you will draft a stipulation saying this and have the court stamp the stip So Ordered. Shit you cant stip to you will argue.

'tis decidedly not so.

I interned there in law school. it's SPS. when it came time to apply for jobs, i applied to a bunch of govt agencies in NYC but didn't even send in an application to the Law Dept. It's the government equivalent of shitlaw.

That said, shitgov is still better than actual shitlaw.

practically speaking, your "competition" is a significant portion of unemployed recent grads from Fordham, Dozo, Brooklyn, St. Johns, NYLS, Seton Hall, Pace, CUNY, Touro etc.

Every single one of those schools will have posted the opening on their career services website. Figure at schools like Dozo or Brooklyn, you'll still have a non-trivial percentage of top-10% grads without jobs, with that percentage getting larger as you go down the class rankings.

so, bottom line, your competition is everyone from law review kids who struck out with firms to TTTT-dumbs who magically passed the bar.

No cake-walk.
