not caring goes a long way. gunners treat the job like law school where they outlined like bitches and go crazy. you need to pace urself and figure out what to spend time on and what not to waste time with, a lot of the job appearance and not substance. focus on avoiding typos, short crisp sentences, loaded with case law (even if not really that applicable) and getting partners briefs that look like they are in good shape ahead of time. dont waste time trying to write brilliant prose or come up with amazing legal arguments. copy old briefs on your firms system with impunity. before u send emails out, print them out and read them line by line to check for typos, etc...

Every time I send an email to a client now, I spend the next 20 minutes waiting expectantly for the hyper-competent mid-level/senior associate who I CC'ed to catch something retarded I did and ask me to send an embarrassing follow-up. "Please disregard last attachment -- that was a earlier redline," "Apologies, David, inadvertently left you off this distribution," "Please see attached doc for corrected year on signature pages," etc. Then there's the shit they can't do anything about other than shake their head and lose faith in you, e.g., a typo in the subject line of all places, even after you spent 20 minutes proof-reading the body of a 100 word email to catch that shit. My most satisfying work moments now are just sending out an email and not cringing over something in it right after.

This sounds right.
I think the OP, and myself, have the problem with your number 1. It doesn't come as easy to some people as others, and no matter how many times I edit something, there are typos that someone else finds and highlights.
Also basically being required to be an encyclopedia about all things you're working on, whenever anyone asks you questions about anything. I find that I barely understand, or can explain with any coherency, the stuff I'm doing.

Ugh, this is giving me bad memories. I wasn't type A at all, and I also began law believing there should be some loose association between the effort I expended and the value to the client. Once I realized that the partners had absolutely no issue with me moving well into the realm of diminishing returns on time (re-reading a brief for the 5th time to catch that double space formatting issue), it became a lot easier.
Ultimately I broke down because I got tired of billing my clients/friends for stuff I didn't think was very valuable. I do video game stuff now. Much better.

any normal person feels this way. only the super faggot gunners thrive and feel engaged by the endless rigmarole and niggling 'detail' work that you engage in as a 1st-3rd year biglaw drone.
follow the advice in this thread and just realize that the shit doesn't seriously matter and everybody is engaging in a professional culture that is akin to a mass hallucination. in reality the shit isn't important and the whole system is designed so that someone else will correct any of the useless errors you make. the horrifying culture of simpering admonishment and stress is just the natural byproduct of that system.

Just remember its all complete flame. Many fields more important than law get away with txt typing 4 rill.
As for briefs, if you just type short sentences and avoid pretentious shit like semicolons your intent will be clear even if there are a couple of errors.
95% of what lawyers do is extraneous. So if something feels particularly useless, it is.

I knew like the first month. Some people just aren't made to do it. I immediately started fantasizing about doing anything else. I just half-assed my way through the entire time there. I have a hard time stomaching the presence of assholes, and biglaw is full of them.
At literally no point was I like "wait ... maybe I WILL make a career out of this."
Doing something more chill now, not practicing. Still not 100% happy because I'm stuck in an area I don't really want to be, but it could be worse.

Attention to detail is critical.
I saw a guy get fired on the spot for screwing up a number on a bank account thus delaying closing on a 5bn deal and another dude forgot one of the CP docs and the other side refused to sign until that was resolved which took an additiol 3 days.
Sending emails to wrong people is also a fireable offence in a highly confidential MA deal or litigation.
Typos and stuff makes you look stupid but isnt a big deal otherwise.

Read out loud every single recipient of every email you send out when creating new email.
When replying to emails then just scan to make sure its right.
You need to be thinking actively at all times. Think, "who is my target audience and who needs to read this?" Thinking like that ensures you dont send to wrong people or miss someone.
I once sent something to the wrong person and had to have an awkward 3 way conference call with a partner and a GC as to what happened at 2am on a Saturday. The GC was like "but you guys are [v5 firm]! You honestly expect me to believe this was an honest mistake??"
