Here is my rudimentary understanding, pls somebody else chime in if I am wrong.
Send cover letter and resume to one of the Big 4 (CAA, WME, ICM, UTA). Regardless of your background (JD, MBA, work experience) you will start in the mailroom. After some time in the mailroom, you get assigned to an agent's desk, or rotate among many agents' desks. You work a lot. You read scripts, you handle phones, etc. Ultimately you rise up to become an agent.
