Class of 08 from a T20. Got lathamed from BIGLAW in late 2009. Mix of unemployment/ doc review since. Doc review pays the bills, but what I really need is a career change.

Give me some recommendations on what I should do, and how I should get there.

Pertinent facts about me:

Average intelligence (1310 SAT taken cold, 165 LSAT with about 1 month prep). Lazy as shit.

I am very good at rote memorization, basically how I got through school. I basically memorized word for word the Con Law portion of the Barbri Mini-Conviser or whatever its called ala Chemerinsky to pass the Bar Exam.

Decent math skills, but certainly not at the high level type of math (like proofs and theorems and shit). Don't have DAT RIGOUR.

Help me brothers. And please keep insults to a minimum, I am suicidal.

brother have you considered doing marketing or operations for a tech company (one that is beyond the startup phase but not quite facebook/google big)? some of the soft skills you get from practicing law, like organization, discipline, timeliness, etc, can be useful in an operational role.

See above. Can't really up and move cause of wife.

Plus dental school is like, what 4 years? Even the cheap ones would run about 200k total, no?

Plus I make at least 50k/yr doing doc review, so I'm looking at almost 500k of expenses plus opportunity costs.

Not sure if worth it....

Take 1.5 years of science classes at community college night school. Then go get a carribean MD.

All the decent carribean schools place 75%+ of their students in USA residencies, at which point you're basically the same as a USA-trained doctor.

See e.g.:

It sounds like you were doing lit in BIGLAW. Take some classes in a business area that interest you like organizational management, HR management, environmental regulatatory bullshit. Just anything you have some interest to.

THen apply to business side jobs in those positions and spin your classes as showing that you have an interest. Basically every HUGE company has shit loads of compliance ppl that aren't usually lawyers. They do shit like audits and investigations and horseshit like that.

This is hard of course. You should probably just move out of the US, or blow your brains out. TBF.

Basically I enjoy reading the Economist and most of the topics covered in that magazine.

A few random thoughts: Have you considered sales, maybe financial planning? Insurance? Risk management positions? How about military - are you too old for OCS? Mediation/arbitration opportunities? Become a sole practitioner. Apprentice yourself to a solo guy and learn the ropes if need be. Some boutique litigators will take on temps to handle big cases. It's often horrible work, but go in with the goal of learning solo practice. Unlike the CW on this board, I know quite a few people who do very well in extremely small offices (bankruptcy, criminal defenese, PI). Breh, I started a business in 3L and avoided a life of slavery in BL. You can do that, too. Working wife is a huge asset if she is supportive. You are a smart enough guy (which is better than being too smart, believe me), and if you have even a little personality you can do fine. Lazy is a problem, but wake up every morning with a "to do list," and keep reminding yourself of your goal. Stop watching TV. Anything you land will take 100-1000 attempts to get a hit, and the first thing you find may not be ideal, but keep at it. Persistence triumphs over genius any day of the week.

Subject: Consulting

Consulting - Mostly energy and environmental studies. My friend, who had just been fired, and I both had some experience in that area. Our first job was writing a noise control ordinance for a small city. We did a number of financial analyses of environment and energy facilities for Ibanks, and some really boring work writing regs for USG agencies. The business plan was to do anything someone would pay us for, and that ended up being pretty diverse. A lot of what we did was like law practice at 1/3 the fee but 1/10 the aggravation. We hired a few people, mainly fresh BA grads, and operated a little pyramid like a law firm. I spent almost all of 3L on this instead of going to class. We quickly sold the business and I went on to start some tech companies. Did you know Steve Emanuel started Emanuel's Law Outlines in his 1L? His first one was for CivPro. The class really sucked, and he said he could write it better than it was being taught. He was right.

I applied to some small firms doing stuff like family law or immigration, stuff I might be interested in.

I have absolutely no interest in crim/ personal injury type stuff, so I don't really apply to those.

sux dude. your main problem is u haven't been doing anything relevant for years. you have to have something to offer beyond mere potential. it's just a huge red flag that u have been sitting flagging documents for 2 yrs or whatever. if i were u i would try to do some internships or something relevant to revitalize my resume. be able to say that u have done law & motion shit, etc

You could probably figure out immigration law on your own and make ok money without working that hard. SF has a large immigrant population. Most of them don't have a ton of money, and it's routine work, so they pick whoever comes up in a Google search that is reasonably inexpensive. Just spend a month reading everything you can about it, rent a desk at WeWork, build a SquareSpace website, and buy some Google AdWords.

Is the doc review really mindless? how much do you have to work to make 50K a year?

whats so bad about mindless work for 50K a year if you have limited interests anyways?

Probably about 9 months out of the year, which is pretty doable.

And yes it's mindless, very mindless.

There is nothing wrong with it, I rather like it. The problem is the writing is clearly on the wall that this won't last forever.

I'm 30 years old, I can't see myself doing this when I'm 35, much less 55.

Why won't it last forever? because you don't want to do it or because you won't keep getting gigs?

50K for 9 months of work really doesn't seem that awful.

No it's not awful at all. If you could guarantee this for me for 30 years, I'd just do it.

I meant doc review as a "steady" job won't last forever. There's already a push towards using computers for most of the work and shit.

Maybe but why not ride this out while you can. In the meantime you can plan a business on the side. Why not start making webpages and putting up banner ads and getting a stream of income coming in?

pretty easy to make around 50k at $30-50/hr projects + overtime... problem is getting staffed on a project, the fact that a project could end at any moment, etc etc.. the biggest problem is you are learning no skills whatsoever and it's a huge scarlet letter on any resume.

Now, physician assistant, I have thought about.

Brother, I am like you, but I have a more prestigious pedigree. I have been walking around in the same circle for a while, though it seems I may get a lucky break soon. Here are some things you can do:

Compliance--Lots of regulations to interpret and keep up with. Boring shit but you become more valuable over time. The JD is a plus.

Due Diligence -- This is basically doc review, but its a permenant position in a non-law place like a bank or consulting firm. Mostly investigations stuff that will accept your doc review experience.

Staff Attorney -- Permanent Doc Reviewer at a firm.

What would you think about making 35k in an administrative assistant position at an internet company? Mah buddy works for a place that's hiring... he doesn't love it because of the pay scheme, but it's a job in the Bay Area. From what I hear, raises are based on passing online tests (i.e., memorize 100 question/answers about Javascript or PHP or whatever, pass the test, get $1 more per hour). Could make it to $50k/year in a few months... that's what he did.

100% serious. He tried to get a mutual friend to start working there a few weeks ago.

It would certainly be the career change you're looking for. Could probably swing a couple of years there into a position at a more decent internet services company on the peninsula or SF.

Where are you at specifically?
