As Dewey went down, I read some quite disgusting stuff about the firm's work environment like:

- partner telling associates he could find 1000 of them on the street at any time

- secretaries backstabbing each other and the associates,

- associates bullied by some admin people

- people treating each other like shit

- people crying behind closed doors

- partner telling associates that they may only work on his deals

I have been in biglaw for a while but these tales sound incredulous. Partners are dipshits in general, but they don't usually scream at people or tell associates they are worth shit. Secretaries and admin people are unhelpful and lazy, but they usually don't bully or backstab associates. I haven't heard anyone crying or any partner claiming monopoly over an associate's time. Are people making these shit up or am I just lucky to be a gentler place than the typical nyc biglaw?

at my first firm, i knew a guy who broke down and cried.

at my second firm, the partner tries to keep me off other cases for other partners so i am always free for his shit, which has now resulted in me billing zero hours because has no work and will probably get de-equitized in a year

how does the partner keep you off other partners work? what are some things to look out for? don't want to be stuck working for a guy like that.

when i first started, he badmouthed other partners trying to give me work, saying they had no juice at the firm and it was a waste of my time. once, when i asked a specific partner for work and finally got some from him, partner told me i didnt have bandwidth to take on his work.

i thought this partner had an unlimited supply of work and plenty of juice at firm, but turns out he is a glorified service partner and relies on whim of rainmakers in other offices to feed him shit. mistake by me.

I can see this happening. As much as we think we can perceive this shit, it's in fact extremely difficult to tell which partners are actually responsible for the business and which are full of shit and riding coattails.

it's pretty easy to tell. your firm should have database of some kind where you can search matters by "billing attorney" (or something similar). the partner in your group with largest # of matters will be the bigshots. they will also tend to occupy the corner offices, talk on the phone a lot, usually gone by 7 and rarely handle legal work

exactly, you can also tell from body language and how the senior secretaries and other partners treat each other. there was a partner in my office who basically came in whenever he want, left at 5 everyday etc etc. but at the end of the day he personally owned 30-40% of the entire corp practice's business.

I've seen the monopoly situation. Got overruled fairly quickly when the associate wasn't billing at full pace. But I hear about that happening quite a bit.

A big issue I've seen that wasn't listed is partners asking asociates not to bill for work (because client will get pissed about the money). That's bs that the partner should deal with. Write it off or find a new client, pal.

Asking associates not to bill shit is the mark of a mismanaged TTT. This really means you cannot trus their time records. If your firm does this, start dusting off your resume ASAP.

- partner telling associates he could find 1000 of them on the street at any time

: seen something close to this a few times, but not so mean.

- secretaries backstabbing each other and the associates,

: secretaries backstab each other; all of ours are afraid of associates or just dont want to deal with them

- associates bullied by some admin people

: never seen, except for some asshats in finance

- people treating each other like shit

: every day bro

- people crying behind closed doors

: yes, more often than Id like to admit - mostly due to brutal workloads and demands. seen two screamers who made a few cry - they were bad screamers but rainmakers so....

- partner telling associates that they may only work on his deals

: all the time, but at the end of the day a group leader steps in to make sure associates are at capacity; this usually leaves the associate more screwed than the partner, but probably for the best since the only toxic situation here is partners who want a monopoly but can't support you with hours

it all suckssssssssssss

I think its not unusual for administrative non-equity partners like the guy who was in charge at Dewey to act like assholes. Typically they lack whatever skills or connections one needs to be able to reel in clients, so they are hangers-on who figure out that working in admin is a good way to ensure job security, because after all service partners are not worth much ITE. They start to get power trippy once they have that seat.

I have had the partner tell other partners to pretty much "back the fuck off". I was in a rainmaker's office talking about an assignment, and I asked, "When do you need this by? I am working on something for another partner." He asked, "Which partner?" I told him, and he called the partner. The rainmaker said, "Hey ____. You need to get someone else, I have ______ working on my assignment. Just get another body to do it." When the rainmaker hung up the phone, he said, "Don't waste your time on that shit (referring to the other partner's assignment)."

I worked in a department full of screamers, and they would get to the point of throwing shit at the wall. I have mentioned it before, but I had a partner throw his mouse at the wall. He ripped it out of the computer and just chucked it. I grabbed the mouse for him, and he said, "Thanks" and just threw it against the wall again. The most troubling thing is that he blew up because his computer was operating very slowly.

That same partner also threw his phone out of his office. Just threw it like a fucking bowling ball.
