That's kind of a tough one.
Although I believe that credit has to be given mostly to the people the Arabs conquered for the scientific advances of the Islamic golden age, I'm not sure it's because the Arabs are less smart, it could just be that Arabs are more interested in the social and religious side of things. Arabs deserve serious credit for the way they governed at the time when the Catholic church would have banned any idea that went against Church doctrie.
So in sum I believe that Islamic civilization was a hugely important, positive development in antiquity which Arabs deserve credit for. Persians, on the other hand, deserve credit for way more individual scientific advances than the Arabs do, but not for creating this global scene in which science could thrive.
So it's kind of hard to say really. |
