$5 billion would be enough to get T20 status in a couple of decades. If you had $30 billion, you could probably found a top-6 university--that's about the size of Harvard's endowment.

Chicago, Vandy, CMU, Stanford, and Rice were all founded relatively recently by robber barons.

Rochester, Emory, and Duke only became prestigious via the donations of other robber barons (Eastman Kodak, Coca Cola, and Duke Energy/American Tobacco Company, respectively).
