That said, it's understandable why a female lawyer, for example, might want a partner with at least a ug degree, and it doesn't have to do entirely with educational elitism. |

but that seems silly because in general it's not like you and a potential mate need to come from similar backgrounds in order to get each other. you'd marry someone who grew up in a drastically different country, right? or from a rural area? etc. |

1)Similarity of ambition: I'd like a partner who has ambitions similar to mine --someone who I can share in with my struggles to succeed. A non-college educated person may also have ambitions, but they are likely to be substantively different.
2)Similarity of intellectual ambition/depth: A person without a college education is, all else equal, unlikely to be the sort of person who reads Foreign Affairs for fun or enjoys discussing economic policy over dinner. Mock it if you like, but these things matter to me, and they do to some other educated women, as well. I am not interested in a partner without a highly active mind/who is not very well read.
3)Similarity of life perspective: Bettering oneself via education and developing one's intellect are highly important personal values of mine. Certainly, a person could ostensibly achieve this without a college education, but it's exceedingly rare -- exceptions, it goes without saying, exist -- but the deisre to continuously grow and develop in this way is less likely when a person didn't even value a college education.
That's all. I will not respond further for te reasons mentioned above. If you think these reasons are meaningless, so be it.

others simply want to wait until marriage and/or until they're in a serious relationship where they love the other person. just because women in this day and age hand it out like candy doesn't mean the people abstaining are the fucked up ones. they're not "normal" in the sense that they're not having sex while everyone else is, sure, but they can be normal in every other meaningful way. |
