Linux is king for keeping old hardware going.

A laptop from 2002 with your choice of Windows or OSX loaded on it is going to run like garbage.

To use a car analogy, Linux is like the indestructible Toyotas of yore.

Longevity and usability.

All of the laptops Apple was selling 10 years ago can only be upgraded to OSX 10.4.11, which last received a security update in 2009.

Any of these machines can be loaded with a current, secure version of Linux.
