A friend who went to a TTT UG just graduated from the 10-month MS program in journalism from Columbia Journalism School.
He had to take out $81,000 in loans for this 10-MONTH program.
Is this credited? WTF?

on the other hand I know a 25-year-old grad from a lower T1 UG, no journalism school, who is currently a reporter for one of the 10 largest newspapers in the US.

I've heard that in journalism, if you got it you got it. If not, you don't. No point in getting an $81k 10-month masters degree.
But I don't know much about the field.

The masters can be had for much less money at a comparable school reputation wise.
The only benefit of the masters is the connections one of the higher-end schools can deliver. But if you have the talent, it's pointless and if you don't have the talent, the degree won't help.

2) That time would be just as well spent working and building a portfolio, even at some backwater bottom rung newspaper as long as it offers a chance to actually write with bylines.
