it's not hard to meet people as a 1l. you wont make great friends like in college or high school but it wont be difficult to build some sort of social circle. you will be utterly cut of from the nyc/professional world so you will likely not make friends outside of law school.

you'll meet a bunch of people in your section whose company you'll enjoy and you'll see them 2-3 times/semester outside of school and never during the months of november/december/april/may/june/july. especially in nyc they'll all have real friends and will want to hang out with them.
