In NYC, but honestly I'd do this in any big US city.

I never cook in. I eat out every meal but that isn't really a problem. I eat cheap shit usually like bagels, sandwiches, pizza. Almost never go to a trendy expensive restaurant. Haven't spend more than 15 bucks on a meal in ages, maybe 1-2 times in the last three months.

I drink a lot though. At home mostly. Out I try not to go crazy but I've had some bad weekends where I've blown 250 plus.

I'm thikning this is pretty normal for ppl in big cities who go out a lot.

no, i did it once cause i saw all these blogs flaring up about eating on a dollar a day and was curious whether I could do it. Course I pussied out and it was more like $1.25-$1.50 a day. I just ate alot of potatoes, beans and rice, ramen, bread, and frozen burritos. It wasn't fun, but interesting.

Admittedly, I live in a low COL area.

It is pretty easy to do

1k per person a month is only 33 a day. If you go out to nice restaurants on Fri and Sat and maybe one other day per week us easily blow a lot so that you only have like 15 per day left for the other days of the week.

We spend $700/mo on groceries for two and we eat flounder-type fish, steak and organic chicken at least one dinner a week each, plus buy organic milk and eggs, a decent amount of organic produce, etc.

One thing that helps is to reduce portions, e.g. my wife and I will split a decent sized steak that I could hypothetically finish myself but I'm fine eating less of.

Another thing is good inventory control -- develop a repertoire of dishes you can make quickly and easily, think about the week ahead in advance, and keep the things you know you'll use stocked. E.g. we buy our fish at costco, buy a big-ass thing of fillets and freeze most of them in individual baggies. Easy to just take one out, defrost in water and broil or bake with some simple herbs/spices. Don't buy lots of one-off impulse snacks and don't cook elaborate meals with lots of exotic ingredients on a regular basis. Pay attention to how much of stuff like produce and eggs and milk you actually use in a week and buy accordingly.

drinking is the killer. depending on your tolerance, unless you pregame you can easily drop $75 a night on drinks/drunk food. if you go out thu-sat that's $675/mo. the cr is just to find a boring gf who wants to stay home and watch tv and bang.
