The reason Rolexes are problematic is because they reflect -- whether true or not -- a lack of discernment on the part of their wearer. They are, for lack of a better word "bling" -- indeed, they are among the proto-bling. Regardless of their mechanical excellence, they are now worn in both authentic and imitation form by everyone from the retiree in Tacoma who wanted to get something special at the end of his career to the girlfriend of the new-money trader, flashing about her new Christmas present to a cackling cacophony of sycophantic girlfriends simultaneously excited and jealous by her improving prospects in life.

Moreover, more interesting watches can be had for a lesser price; mechanically superior (by design, complications, and material quality) watches are available at each price point at which a Rolex may be found. What is required to access these other watches is, of course, knowledge -- about horology, history, mechanical craftsmanship, the luxury watch market, and so forth. And thus, in purchasing a Rolex, the wearer reveals the complete absence of that learning.

To be clear: Rolex makes a good watch. A fine watch. Just like BMW makes a great car. And there is a reason for its celebrity -- people wear current Presidentials and Daytonas on the shoulders of earlier generations of Rolex craft, just as the 20-something rides about in his fresh new 335i ignorant of but still due to the excellence of the 2002. But there are better options.

Friend--and this is my last post in this thread--I'm not here to do your watch research for you. If you'd like to argue with me or join in the ad hominem, feel free to do so. On the other hand, you could take this as a reminder that, for people with some knowledge about the watch market and watchmaking, Rolex is no longer considered a go-to watch, particularly given the negative connotations it carries these days. Rolex models have relatively good resale value; you can still recoup your loss and grab something else. Thanks.

the 3135 is shit. Rolex has asked me for over $1500 to replace the main spring on a 1994 seadweller that was serviced every 5 years and worn infrequently. The watch is actually a piece of shit. Good thing it is waterproof because the band is so poorly constructed that the thing fell off my wrist into a bowl of soup while i was sitting at the dinner table. one of their cheap ass pins broke while I was eating my soup.

Can I insult Rolex you pretentious little turd?

BS. Quartz watches costing $25 are mechanically superior to Rolexs, this is a fact, they are more accurate. Rolex, Breitling, Patek, Cartier are not worn for their mechanics, they are essentially a type of jewelery.

I think it's fair to say that when one gets into the price range of "thousands" for a watch, they are in part buying a good wristwatch, but they are also in part buying jewelry. While it is well known that a timex keeps better time than a rolex, the latter is a credited piece of jewelry (and a watch is arguably the only acceptable male jewelry), especially if you get one other than stainless.

I don't think that's necessarily fair to say, at least for men. Some men are buying them as jewelry. But watches are also bought as objects of mechanical and/or engineering achievement and precision or for their historical significance (particularly if you buy vintage). Of course, I doubt those are considerations for most people rocking the latest Hublot. But that's too bad for them.

You sound like the striver idiot. any xpensive watch is either jewelery or a collectable. They are all completely obsolete wastes of money except for these purposes. All watches should be evaluated for fit in these categories, and rolex fits both, highly collectable and well recognized as jewelery. My 1964 Rolex explorer may be historically significant, but its value comes from it's collectability. I dislike Rolexs and expensive watches and I actually use a Casio as a sports watch, but I wear a Rolex to send signals of wealth and success to clients, and to have a timepiece on my wrist to keep track of time for billing purposes without obviously looking at a clock.

when I was in HS I had two watches: a Datejust and a Movado (they were cool back then I swear). I received numerous compliments on the good looks of the Movado. I never once received a compliment on the rolex. I would never buy a Movado today, but I do think its interesting that people probably noticed I was wearing a rolex, but refused to compliment me. Obviously, this is because it reeks of superiority. This is why I prefer brands like Panerai that are understated and not offensive to proles.

No, that's cause it was a fucking Datejust. Pretty much the epitome of a cheesy "my uncle wears one" watch.

Not to mention it's probably THE most faked watch in the world, and tons of TTT brands like Seiko have copied the look. So yo usee someone wearing one, you can't tell if it's a fake rolex, a real rolex, or a $100 Seiko.

That being said, fuck it, I still want one.

An understated European watch with a leather wristband and claims to "historical significance" is best.

Unfortunately, IWC doesn't seem to have many watches that can double as sporty and dressy (the way a Rolex Sub can). The IWC diving watches are very casual, and their portugese and portofinos are extremely dressy.

the bands dont stretch, the pins bend and break. the newer rolexes appear to be pretty poorly made and fall apart pretty quickly, like my seadweller upthread. the watch itself actually requires even more expensive maintenance and repairs than the band. Rolex servicing is an even more overpriced rip off than the watch itself. Now I take my watches to a private shop, but you should still expect a Rolex to cost about $100 per year for maintenance and repairs.

Watches are for effeminate douchebags.

If you must, get a nice pocketwatch and watch the limpwristed watchwearers hit their menstrual cycles when you whip it out

How do you feel about small watches: leather bands, gold faces not more than an inch wide?

my dad sold his business for around $6 mill in 2008.

he wears a non-descript watch, can't remember the brand, but i think he told me he paid like $400 for it. similarly well off guys he knows and hangs out with don't wear anything especially expensive, at least not day to day.

lol at nigger-rich white collar strivers blowing money on this for social signaling. may as well start wearing chains and get rims on your piece of shit A6.

u seem just a little bit mad. the point was he has a shitload more cash and actual wealth than the OP, but doesn't run around like some ghetto dweller anxious to blow the $200 he just made selling crack on some piece of fake bling to let everybody else know how well he's doing.

Actually, this makes a lot of sense.

A lot of wealthy people don't spend and spend on gaudy shit like the "young money" shitheads do.
