Dood I feel the same so I can relate. My parents are loving but my dad is a bipolar alcoholic although the main issue with him is that he's simply REALLY socially inappropriate, retarded and bigoted/racist. I do feel very uncomfortable having him around anyone, he's had a lot of difficulty holding down jobs due to this but he's a cabinet maker/carpenter so they luckily care more about his talents in that area than attitude/personality.
My mom is very nice but due to former abuse, sheltered upbringing etc. can't really relate to most people/acts child-like, although sweet. She's more tolerable but for these reasons dude, I told them it's not possible to make my graduation due to bar exam studying and so we're not going to convocation. No way my dad is interacting with friends/profs- professional reputation is still important and I don't want him unintentionally insulting people or making ass out of himself, especially if alcohol around. Maybe for the best if you do the same.
