Two problems w/ this:

1) Are most firms really going to fire first year if hours are low due to macro reasons (i.e., not b/c no one wants to work with person)?

2) Are any firms really interested in hiring 1st years?

1) many firms will not give a fuck about the reasons and will fire

2) not many but some. I know two people that jumped as first years and I myself recently interviewed a first year for a job at my firm.

dude, time to start looking.

i've been applying to the (few) lit in-house positions that exist and the screening intv rate has been 100% thus far (3 listings all through their career websites, 3 screenings). i'm in round 2 of 4 in one of them.

i'm starting to think it's possible to get out of the billable hellhole structure even as a shitigator.

i have been. i have an offer for appellate lit but it is in Palo Alto. partners here told me if i bill 1500 not to worry, i won't get cut this cycle.

how are you finding these openings? just going to company's career websites? i doubt i interview as well as you.

yeah, company websites for the most part of places i want to work at in bay area and LA and there are also sites like the Association for Corporate Counsel that aggregate listings.

i have job offers for big and mid-law firms but i think i'm going try my best to hold out for in-house if i can. realistically i don't want to work for anymore than another year at a firm and i don't see the point of having more of the same on my resume at this point in my career.

if you see yourself gunning for partnership at the appellate place, then go for it, but if this is just another place to hide for 1-2 years, i don't see why not just ride things out at the current place and figure out your real next step. if you go to a new place, you're going to have to start over and make nice with everyone again. i also think it looks a bit unfocused to have 3 firms on your resume and it'll be harder to explain the third jump at this juncture in your career if your ultimate goal is in-house/govt/something other than firm. also appellate lit is a niche area that isn't marketable outside lit. i have the same issue re 3 firms were i to accept another firm job and the answer that "only firms wanna hire me" isn't a good one.

no tips other than to have the requisite background (biglaw + good law school) and wait for the proper listings to show up.

i apply through the company's website so i don't have any inside connections or anything (other than one company where i have friends who work there).

i guess one thing you can do is to tailor your resume to the type of position it is. for instance, for entertainment jobs, i highlight my entertainment-related experience. for software/internet companies, i highlight my soft IP experience. it also helps to have multiple writing samples so you can use a different one for each particular field.

well i dont want to gun for partner but the other firm gives me more years of biglaw $ then billing 1500 here. and what if i form babby? it seems really short sighted to just sit here at my current firm collecting paychecks cause that is the easy thing to do.
