Breaking Bad is an awesome show, but I'd put the Wire as the greatest. Honorable mention for Sopranos, Seinfeld, Mad Men & the Simpsons.

I loved the Wire, but I disagree.

I suppose if one subjectively strongly prefers weaving plots and social themes to in your face intensity, this is understandable.

BB is also filled with weaving plots and social themes. Though BB has more shock value than The Wire, I feel the later had more intelligent writing.

the dialogue in deadwood is extremely styalized, which is a turn off for some people (I loved it). Also, the main character in the first season is boring and a bad actor. they make the show more about al swerington as it goes on because he is so 180.

Dat David Milch Shakespearean style dialogue. I liked it too, and it worked best on Deadwood of all his shows. But it basically made the show difficult to follow for all but the most intelligent, detail-oriented viewers (which was fine by me).

I guess it's not so much that people couldn't follow the plots, but that whole chunks of dialogue would fly over their heads and they wouldn't understand the words at all, even if they would later be able to put 2 and 2 together and figure out what was going on.

Here is an example: "As capable of inconvenience and of some damage and debt to those that would not against my interests, I cannot argue with dangerous. Different from powerful, which speaks to potency longer term. I’d not have myself called powerful in your company or the captain’s."

It's a lot to ask an average audience-member to process stuff like that.

It is absurd for Deadwood fans to proclaim that the dialogue was the difficult part to understand. The difficult part of the show was that there were tons of scenes that were pointless. There were lesbian sex scenes between Jane and the brothel owner woman and tons of scenes with the theater troupe that made 0 sense!

Anyways, I put Deadwood way ahead of BB, but The Wire is way ahead of either of those 2. My list w/ scores:

Wire -99

Sopranos - 85

Rome - 80

Deadwood - 70 (show goes nowhere in S3 but maybe would have made sense if Milch was given warning like Rome writers were that the show was about to get canned)

Very few shows have rewatch value compared to the 4 above. GoT S1 was really good and I'm sure could be watched tons of times, but I don't know if I would enjoy re-watching S2 again. I didn't get hooked onto BB after watching a few eps. I didn't sympathize w/ the main character, and it didn't have a sprawling ensemble cast.

not really that absurd at all really. likely the most difficult to understand dialogue on any hbo series ever. i'm not sure anyone could fully digest it without subtitles or watching each episode at least 3x. also every scene made sense.

my memory is hazy but among deeper thematic issues it gave us a much richer sense of the era we were dealing with, and theater troupe's juxtaposition with the stock deadwood cast/setting particularly underscored the heathenous and violent nature of that town.

Not "bad" but I'm not terribly impressed with 80% of the show. It's almost a mundane drama with nothing going for it but the cool flair of the historical setting.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves bro. Wire left the door open with a horrendous fifth season that jumped the shark. Let's see what happens in Season 5 here, could stumble like the wire.

Brian Cranston has to be the most unappreciated actor of the last 20 years, that much is clear.

5th season of Wire was by far the weakest of the bunch(McNulty serial killer was just a dumb idea), but still not bad compared to the rest of TV. The season only sucked compared to the other seasons, not in general.

I thought the last episode of BB season 4 kind of jumped the shark when Gus walked out post bomb terminator style.

I disagree with your last point. Though it was a little over the top and certainly not realistic, up until that point Gus had been 100% badass unstoppable (like when the sniper attacked them). I think that moment gave me one last gasp of gd this dood is invincible in an unbelievable way. More real would have been him simply dying from the bomb. What that scene lacked in realism it made up ten fold in surprise value. 180 scene imo

brian cranston is fantastic but BB is actually too melodramatic of a show to be #1. it's kind of the opposite of most shows in that instead of always going for happy endings the show basically exists to fuck all the characters. but in that way it's still extremely predictable

My view is that the show is overrated in some ways by people who aren't as sophisticated as me, but also is severely underrated by people who, unlike me, aren't sophisticated to pick up on its several subtle excellencies. In short, I have given the best possible answer and am justifiably smug.

If you're not valuing rewatch value highly, I would agree with The Shield. This is a thrill ride from start to finish.

If you only want to watch a show once:

Homeland S1 perhaps had the most gripping opening season on TV but it's extremely dependent on plot twists.

My question for the BB fans:

Does this show have re-watch value? I feel I could watch The Wire every year and enjoy it since I'm not waiting for the latest twist, but to see how the different plot lines reinforce the themes the writers wanted to get at.

i almost always watch new eps of BB multiple times. would i ever go back to s1 and re-start from the beginning? probably not because the twists, turns and shock value are 90% of the enjoyment. plus there are too many other worthwhile shows, films, and non-couch potato activities to consume that frankly i don't think rewatch value is a very important metric for qualifying a tv show.

top 5 without question. after watching a couple episodes of BB, the rest of television looks embarrassingly shoddy.

some ITT have mentionend it doesn't have great "rewatch" value but i disagree. been watching it from the beginning for the 2nd time (some episodes for the 3rd or 4th time) and it's just as enjoyable. plot twists and shock value aren't the entirety of its appeal. excellent scripting, directing, photography, and acting (from the two leaads anyway) too

I ended up watching seasons 1-4 of BB recently (they're on Netflix now). I would put it on par with Sopranos: too much BS with whiny women who detract from the main story lines.

Best shows (excluding comedies):

Wire

(huge gap)

Shield

Sopranos/BB

Strong shows but tier below previous ones:

Rome

Mad Men (stopped watching after they start their own firm since it seemed clear that the writers didn't plan this from the start of the show)

Shows that had amazing writing to start but fizzled 1.5 seasons in:

Dexter and Deadwood (Dexter clearly needed to end at end of s2)

GoT (s2 was much weaker than s1 but next season should be amazing)

Notable mention for Homeland, which has an amazing opening season, but the premise seems like it'll only work for one season.
