cool.

next question. will anyone care that my hours are very unevenly distributed?

month a: 50 hours

month b: 250 hours

month c: 70 hours

month d: 220 hours

this distribution is fucked up enough that they probably will not be happy. Unless you are on vacation, you should not bill 50. Also, the client will not like seeing 250 hours billed in one month by one lawyer unless there is a crazy closing or something.

in my experience, if you are billing that high it is because you are in a closing or at trial. it would be very hard to multi-task between several matters and still bill 250. Those kind of hours come from billing 20 hours a day on one shitty deal.

this depresses me. the 250 hour month was because the other associate on the case was out sick for 2 weeks and I had to do double my usual work.

if that's so, and you just ended up billing all of his hours too, no one is going to give a shit. fewer attorneys on the bill is preferred

Firms care about the bottom line. They don't care otherwise unless the client complains.

50 hours? Just stay 3 extra days and bill like 10+ hours, then you're barely under.
