All in right around $300k. The median week is probably 55, but there are definitely the occasional 80 hour week. I bill around 2k.

you must be horribly inefficient if you are typically in 55 hours a week and have some 80 hour weeks yet only bill 2000.

you must be doing a lousy job if you're putting that much time into it and not coming up with billable hours to put you over 2000.

I don't think you understand how this works. You don't move your way up at a law firm by billing heavy hours. You move up by bringing in work that associates do, and making sure that work would travel with you if you left the firm. This is you "portable book" and is really the only important figure of merit for success in biglaw.

IT has its plusses and minuses. The most fun in going in house at a small company where you are part of the strategic team, but that is obviously risky. Working at a big company is not that different from Biglaw really

Patent lit is actually a sperate group where I work, so I don't have access to all the metrics, but I know there is a decent amount of lateral hiring going on.

These days they are hiring anyone with a reg # and a pulse who acts like a quasi-normal human during the interview process. That last part might be a tough hurdle for him.

I'm pretty happy. I would love to work 30% less for 30% less pay, but in general the work is interesting and challenging. I represent mostly young PE/VC backed companies, and I'm pretty heavily involved in my client's strategic decisions and business negotiations, so I have never felt like just a scribe.

There are billable minimums, but thats not really the main issue. To maintain a client base and stay on top of the work you really need to work a lot. Its not like when you are a junior associate and its possible to kind of selectively take work. If one of my clients calls and says "hey, we are in the middle of being acquired by a strategic buyer and we need to have an FTO opinion done ASAP" or "hey we have an opportunity to license out are IP, can you fly out to the west coast for the negotiation" you can't say nope, I already worked 40 hours this week.

Advice for 1st year. Should I focus on lit or pros (assume I have the choice to do both).

Easier in-house with pro vs. lit?

You should try both and see which one you enjoy. They are two totally different jobs.

Much easier to go in house with pros.

First year V10 IP lit associate. No reg. number or pros experience - pretty much pure litigation. EE background. Any idea what kind of in-house job (i.e., non-firm) am I looking at after 4-5 years?
