How bad would it look if I bailed now?

Working as a prosecutor. Took it because it was the only thing I could get. Now job for which I would be highly competitive at a place with rare turnover is coming open. I'd enjoy the work 1000 times more.

It would look bad, but it's not like there's not at least 50 recent graduates lined up to get their jittery, chubby, sweaty paws on your current job.

The better question is whether you owe a contractual commitment to your prosecutor's office. I don't know how common that is, but I believe the ones in NYC require a 3 year commitment.

I don't feel any contractual commitment. My position is time-limited anyway and at best will last through next summer. Also, the elected prosecutor who hired me has left and been replaced so there's been significant office turnover.

I work at the pleasure of someone who didn't hire me and can fire me at any point for any reason, including if he doesn't like the color of my tie. Where's the contractual agreement in that kind of arrangement?

Sounds like there's no reason for you to not at least apply for the new position. The guy who hired you, and the only person who might give a crap if you left, is gone, and you'll be gone by next summer at the latest. Your leaving might look bad to some bureaucrats in the office, but who gives a crap.

There's no guarantee I'd get the job, obviously, but the odds are pretty high. Interned there. Strong connections within the office. Background is exactly what they're looking for. Strong personal connections, etc., etc.

Had I any inkling something would come open, I would've waited for it.

You would be nuts not to pursue the new job. And unless you try to leave this new job within two years nobody will ever mention the short stint to you. Just make sure new job is ok w/ you bailing on old job.
