if it's free, competition from law burnouts is going to be fucking fierce. In 5 years you'll probably have to have a Yale PhD to get any kind of entry-level academic position if you're not a HYS grad.

Because legal academia is serious business, and not utter bullshit. So allowing potential academics a way to concentrate on their scholarship is exactly what they should be doing. Unless legal academia actually is complete bullshit, then the program is a ridiculous waste of time, money, and effort.
