Just got a long ass email going to town on me for some arguments I "made" in a brief.
"As you can tell, I'm a bit frustrated. I don't think this section was remotely close to the standard of work we expect."
The parts he criticized were almost completely copied from another brief he filed on the exact same issue 2 years ago.
We're going to DISCUSS IT in the morning. How should I handle this? Just bend over and take it? Point out he didn't seem to have a problem with the arguments two years ago?

I worked for a partner that was like this too. Similar to you and another poaster, that partner is jewish too. I don't know why, but working with him has not made me anti-Semitic; rather, I am just apathetic towards Jews and Israel. I used to care about the issue and not anymore. Either way, back on point, I would be careful about talking about his previous brief. He might get pissed and say something like, "well, that was a different case. I hope you don't expect to practice law like this. Even the most generic contract needs to be tweaked for the issue at hand." I would suggest that you say that you used previous briefs as guidance (not that you pulled it right out of it--i.e., copied and pasted it). Then, just take the ass reaming. BigLaw is similar to prison in that you are either fucking someone or you are the one getting fucked.

I came in early this morning (8am)in hopes of reading through the brief and reviewing the materials before he got in, but he was already here and the brief was sitting on my chair with the words
"[Associate], Please see me. Thx, [Partner]."
I went over to his office to see if he wanted to discuss it immediately. He did. He asked me to print out a fresh copy of the brief and meet him in the nearest conference room.
He explained that he hoped his email wasn't too harsh, but also hoped that it was harsh enough to get his point across. I told him, "I definitely got the message."
He then spent the next half hour criticizing the 8 pages of the brief, section by section. I nodded a lot and said things like, "I understand," "Yeah, that makes sense," and "Oh, I see." Around the 35 minute mark, I think he realized it was his, because he stopped and leaned back in his seat. He then started to ask, "Did you get this from another," but then stopped himself and shifted gears.
From then on he started talking about how it's alright to use older briefs as references, but said that sometimes people get things wrong, and OCCASIONALLY things will even get past him, so if I ever use something older for reference, I should think CRITICALLY about it and look deeper into the issues to avoid rehashing shitty arguments.
The whole thing went on for about an hour. He stopped by my office later on and invited me to join him and some other old faggots for lunch. I didn't want to go, but I accepted his bullshit peace offering.
