Army Maj. Martyn Crighton, a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command in Kabul, said it was not yet clear whether mechanical failure or Taliban fire was responsible.

“Currently, there is no operational reporting that indicates the helicopter was brought down by enemy fire,” Major Crighton said. But he added that “it is far too early in the investigation to make any definitive statement about what caused the accident.” He said everyone on board the helicopter was killed, and he confirmed that the crash occurred in Kandahar Province. But he declined to specify the precise location, saying that recovery and investigative operations may still be under way.

They are 40 years old, but your claim that they weren't designed to operate in mountains is ridiculous, as is every other point you make in every other thread. And besides, this was a black hawk, not a CH-53. As a military master man shouldn't you know the difference?

What do you mean how does it get fired? The simple ones are shoulder fired and wire guided (i.e. the missile is attached by a thin wire to a guidance system located on the ground). Sounds like some Libyan happened to be in the right place at the right time and got a clear shot off.

Americans helos have lower ceilings than Russian helos and are MUCH slower at max altitude than Russian helos. Claiming any US helos is "designed to operate in mountains" is horseshit. The Mi-8MTV-5 with its TV3-117VMA SBM1V engine currently holds the world altitude record for an in-service helicopter at 8,100 meters and it holds the time to climb record at 14 minutes 9 seconds. It was recently bested by its intended replacement the Mi-38 which set set an all time altitude record of 8,800 meters. US helicopters are nowhere in this league and have horrendous time to climb numbers and in the mountains have max speeds of like 80mph. Russian helos just do circles around them literally.

This is why Russia dominates the heavy and super heavy helo market with the US and EU relegated to fighting for the light weight and medium segment of the market where the Russians just dont bother with an entrant.

Seriously, you are going to argue the superiority of RUSSIAN helos? The words "russian helicopter" send shivers down the spine of every non-suicidal pilot in the western world.

Again, you can spout off all the stats you want, but your pilots make due on less than 150 hrs per year. ARE military pilots are logging 300-500 hours per year brother.

How's the latest issue of Aviation Week brother?

The Mi-8 is the model T of helicopters -- with over 10,000 built and the most loved transport helo in the world. Lay idiots can think whatever they want, but Russia has more than half the market in the heavy helo segment today for a reason. And the US couldnt do Afghanistan at all without renting Russian helos!

The Mi8/17 is the helicopter of choice in afg. The air is thinner in the mountains and the mi8 pwn chinooks. Plus, all the afghan pilots grew up on Russian helos. This is the chopper we give them and rosoboroexport is making us pay through the nose for them. Bell can suck a dick..

Considering how Sikorsky just turned to Motor-Sich/Klimov to reengine the S-61 -- yep.

An that would be relevant if Sikorsky were buying from Klimov. They are sourcing from Motor-Sich which is in UKRAINE.

Klimov and Motor-Sich are not the same company.

Motor-Sich is a design house with very little actual capacity to manufacture anything. Their engines are manufactured by Klimov in Russia. It would help if you know WTF you are talking about. Motor-Sich is a room full of engineers doing CAD. Production for the most part is done in Russia.

Please STFU. Klimov and MS are tied at the hip. There isnt a single project at either company that the other is not involved in today.

Yes they have a JV with Klimov to produce certain engines for the RUSSIAN market. You know what a JV is right? The engines for Sikorsky are manufactured in UKRAINE by Motor-Sich and not the Klimov JV.

Gas yourself, immediately.

BS. Motor-Sich does not have capacity to make more than one off prototypes and some minor components. All large scale production work is done in Russia. They survive on Russian good graces. And there are NO engines for Sikorsky only studies to see if you can fit one on an S-61.

Did you even read the link? All VK and TVM family engines be they for Russia, India or China are made at at Klimov. The production was moved to Klimov 5 years ago! MS is a design house. They will draw up blueprints and specifications but all manufacturing is done at Klimov with limited exception. MS is a tiny fucking company. UEC (parent company of Klimov) is 15x its size. Klimov with its paltry 1 billion in annual sales is not up to the task of mass producing engines in-house PERIOD and certainly not the 500+ engines a year the Mi-8 family requires.

You are a fucking dumbass. There are restrictions on purchasing this type of hardware from RUSSIA. The restrictions are much less from UKRAINE. Hence why the engines will be designed and built by motor-sich in UKRAINE.

My god you are a fucking moron.

From the article I linked.

"Neither Sikorsky or Motor Sich would comment on a potential customer for a re-engined S-61, but Boguslayev's comments came just days after the US Congress voted to suspend links with Rosoboronexport, the Russian state arms corporation, potentially threatening further deliveries of Mi-17s to the Afghan armed forces. "

And Sikorsky is replacing the GE engine for ALL MARKETS.

GOOD DAY SIR!!!

Its not Afghanistan. The follow on order for Mi-17's was signed before the congressional vote. Afghanistan will have enough Mi-17's for decades to come. The congressional vote was just symbolic. And Motor-Sich will still make the engines at Klimov. The capacity is not there in Ukraine.

And what does it say about the TTT state of US helicopter building that your options are between Russian Mi-17's or some paper project?

"The proposed commissioning of TAPI coincides with the 2014 timeline for ending the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's “combat mission” in Afghanistan. The U.S. “surge” is concentrating on the Helmand and Kandahar provinces, through which TAPI will eventually run. What stunning coincidences!

In sum, TAPI is the finished product of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. Its primary drive is to consolidate the U.S. political, military and economic influence in the strategic high plateau that overlooks Russia, Iran, India, Pakistan and China."
