used to love that shit when i was in college... would drive home drunk as fuck from the bars, windows rolled down, blasting music. a few times i even had to stop and piss on the side of the road. loved to DUI.

now i fucking realize how lucky i was and what an idiot i was. i wont drive after more than 2 beers now - would swallow the costs and cop dat cab ride home (don't live in walkable city). is this a credited part of growing older and wiser?

even more, you dont want to be that guy who's "really good" at driving drunk until you fuck up. one of my relatives flat out plowed over two people who were stopped one night because a guy's car had broken down and someone was trying to help him. obviously they both died and his life is ruined and his parents, middle class are country churchgoers, are probably tore up as fuck (not to mention constantly gossiped about since it's the type of place where people still know each other)

It's no more dangerous than tons of innocuous shit like talking on the phone, eating, or texting while driving.

However, it's not worth the risk because a group of sleazy propagandists conned society into treating it as a serious crime.

I wasn't implying she was speeding, just that the same thing happens with drivers who are being careless by speeding instead of by texting, and yet the victims' families don't usually become worthless, irrational fucktards on the issue like you've become.

There are degrees of both, bro. Some people look back and forth between road and phone while texting instead of being distracted for an extended period. Some people go 5 over the limit and some go 50.

My point wasn't that the acts are equivalent in all respects, just that you're an irrational dumbass for letting your personal experience with the issue cloud your judgement. Families of speeding victims usually aren't that dumb.

You must be unfamiliar with vehicular manslaughter. Plenty of people are charged with serious crimes for causing a fatality while speeding. If you are recklessly driving, whether that be because of texting or excessive speed, and you kill/permanently injure some one, there should be serious consequences.

You seem to be advocating a more general prohibition (either legal or cultural) against texting than the consequences through vehicular manslaughter charges.

I'm advocating 1. no texting while driving and 2. If you are texting while driving, and kill/seriously injure someone, there should be serious legal/financial consequences. I don't see how there are various degrees of "texting while driving", or why you think you are some kind of expert that can speak to the texting habits of EVERY person.

LOL. So edgy and cool. The argument for NO texting while driving is that it distracts you from you know, DRIVING. I don't care if you look away from the road for 2 seconds or 10 seconds. At 65MPH, 2 seconds is more than enough to drift into another lane or cross a double yellow and cause a major accident. Sorry you are such a massive piece of shit that you can't even give other drivers on the road the courtesy of not purposely distracting yourself.

Right, it creates a slightly higher risk of an accident. That's exactly what happens with speeding and a variety of other behaviors that don't cause you to label anyone a "massive piece of shit."

You're being irrational as FUCK about this particular one, which is typical for an angry retard.

"The study revealed that when traveling at 55 miles per hour (89 km/h), a driver texting for 6 seconds is looking at the phone for 4.6 seconds of that time and travels the distance of a football field without their eyes on the road. Some of VTTI's conclusions from this study included that "texting should be banned in moving vehicles for all drivers", and that "all cell phone use should be banned for newly licensed teen drivers"."

"The study showed that at 35 mph, reading a text message decreased the reaction time the most, 0.12 and 0.87 seconds. Impaired driving at the same speed resulted in an increase of 0.01 and 0.07 seconds. In terms of stopping distances these times were estimated to mean:

Unimpaired: .54 seconds to brake

Legally drunk: add 4 feet

Reading e-mail: add 36 feet.

Sending a text: add 70 feet"

"In March 2012 the UK's Institute of Advanced Motorists published a study which claimed that using smartphones for social networking while driving is more dangerous than drink-driving or being high on cannabis"

LOLOLOLOL. You're done here, move along.

Yeah bro, next time you are on the highway just blindfold yourself for 5 seconds and see what happens to the RISK OF HAVING AN ACCIDENT. It is behavior that is completely unnecessary while driving and is incredibly unsafe, there really is no argument against not doing it. Just wait till you get to a fucking stop light to read or send a text.

Um...most anti-texting laws treat texting at a stop light and texting while going 65 identically. I almost exclusively DO wait for stop lights. Even when you're driving, you don't have to look away for anything close to 5 seconds to send a text if you're competent. You're back to supporting my prior point about there being different degrees of the act that make a blanket prohibition SPS.

Your evidence doesn't say what you think it does. A sixfold increase in danger from one activity to another doesn't mean the new activity is very dangerous, just substantially more dangerous. Driving is a very low risk activity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Traffic_related_deaths_-_Road_fatalities_per_vehicle-km.svg

Yes, your arguments are about the relative dangers of one behavior vs another, NOT THE RISK OF HAVING AN ACCIDENT. The studies show that texting is the MOST DANGEROUS activity relative to things like talking and being intoxicated. You got pwned. If you want to talk about texting increasing accident rates, make another thread and stop trying to move the goal posts in this one.

Good effort, but no. You wouldn't have included that second sentence if that was actually your goal. You got confused and tried to cover for it.

You also seem confused about this whole risk thing. Comparing relative risks is still a discussion of risk. I used that terminology to move the conversation away from comments like "the accident was completely avoidable had she just been PAYING ATTENTION" that are misleading about what actually happens in these cases.

From your own posts. Relative risk =/= absolute risk. Texting is more dangerous relative to other actions while driving. That is all the justification you need to ban it. Your argument seems dumb and poorly thought out. Short of driving blind, the absolute risk of having an accident is still very small, that doesn't mean we shouldn't ban behaviors that increase the relative risk of having an accident.

Which post? My first post discusses relative risk; my second discusses absolute risk. This has always been a discussion that involves both.

You'd have to support a pretty extreme police state to believe that any increase in relative risk should be banned without examining absolute risk. I don't think there's anything wrong with higher relative risk activity that doesn't cross certain absolute risk thresholds.

OP has the right idea, you gotta grow up. I used to DUI all the time in HS and had many close calls with police (including an accident, but it wasn't really my fault). My life would be very different now if I'd gotten a record.

Obviously driving drunk is fun as hell. If you miss the experience just try drunk bike riding and snowboarding and shit. It's still dangerous but you don't endanger other people to nearly the same extent and there's much less legal risk.

yeah man, but no flame, you get situations like this:

http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Man-Sentenced-for-Killing-3-Kids-in-Accident-120888284.html

unfortunately, it is very difficult to deter the behavior.

so whatre you arguing for? lifetime driving ban after 1? life in jail? I dont see how any law could prevent what happened. what he did was extremely illegal as it stands. taking his license wouldnt have stopped it. have to take his freedom

right, what's funny is that Florida has a habitual offender law that is supposed to give the state the right to take people's licenses when they get like 20 moving violations. someone fucked up badly.

We'd prevent a lot more than three dead kids if we lowered all speed limits by 5 mph. But we don't, because it's not convenient.

yeah, i used to tense up a bit when engaging in a slightly risky passing maneuver or if another car surprised me with a sudden swerve. now i've trained myself to relax and loosen my body instead. it's safer if i get into an accident and allows better decision making under stressful circumstances as well.

the only time i worry about it is when it's a high risk period e.g. the bars just got out thr/fri/sat; after a huge sporting event, etc. otherwise, game on.

i'm safer on the road after 12 beers than the 96 IQ woman with three screaming brats eating taco bell and talking on the phone to her best girlfriend driving around her baby daddy dodge durango. that's a fucking fact. she's on the road legally, i'm not, but there's no moral issue involved - purely statutory due to an intense retard prohibition organization that has become so extreme the founder disassociated with the entire enterprise.

non-DUI trolls are beta faggots who don't know how to drive or drink. i fully advocate that those people shouldn't be able to get behind the wheel after their requisite TWO appletinis. faggots.
