The thing is, a lot of times it doesn't even fucking taste better.
A great example of this is jarred tomato sauce. Best "upmarket" jarred sauce? Rao's, clearly. Best "midmarket" sauce? IMO (and I'm not alone), Prego marinara.
No sugar in either. Almost all of this shit has sugar, but these don't. I don't think it's a coincidence that they taste best.

i don't think this is true. the corn has been highly processed into HFCS in a manner so as to create a highly effective delivery mechanism of sugar to the bloodstream. it affects insulin and a bunch of other shit in unnatural ways that chewing on a piece of cane (i.e., unprocessed sugar) does not do. i think there's research that shows it tinkers with your metabolism and might even affect you psychologically in ways that humans have never experienced at all, much less been evolved to cope with. HFCS is dangerous not because of caloric count (which is probably similar to other forms of sugar), but because of these other effects.
white sugar isn't much better, and neither is "raw" sugar. but stuff like agave and maple sugar is.

It functions more like a liquid starch and has several times as much carbohydrate content as what is reported on the label. Not to mention how lots and lots of it is coming from China so who knows how they're actually treating it in their disgusting factories.
Otherwise it's fine.
