U check up on other people's work and see to it that they are following the law / internal procedures / industry standards.

One aspect that makes it difficult to get out of compliance is that it's tough to not be stepping on people's toes.

It's a good fallback option for those who lack the alpha personality required by such places as big4 accounting and accenture IT consulting.

Just say no. I work at consulting firm that has compliance people. Theonly quality we look for in compliance is learning the software and input numbers quickly. The compliance people, at least here, don't do the research and don't really interact with clients. They're just speed monkeys.

if you do compliance in financial industry at a reputable place (not some dinky retail consumer bank), those jobs pay pretty well and generally require a few years at a big 4. starting pay is high 5 to low 6 before bonus. it is sort of niche and not easy to get into and the focus in on maintaining internal info system controls, conducting internal audits and faciliating outside audits.

compliance attorney jobs are different and generally require knowledge of relevant govt regulations and keeping up with required SEC filings, etc. those jobs start in low-100s before bonus (bonus always significant component of any finance firm). i am not a compliance attorney but compliance is maybe 25% of my job. my role in compliance is very different than non-JDs who do compliance work.

i have no idea how "compliance" jobs in other industries work but it's prob unhelpful to lump all "compliance" jobs together.
