heath shuler went into politics and it was a mess. steve largent didn't manage to get much done in congress, and quit running for his seat. jc watts looked like he was moving on up the ranks, but i guess he made some enemies, and he also decided to quit.
the best pro athlete-politics transition was probably bill bradley, and he lost every presidential campaign he ran by huge margins.
gerald ford got to the top by default, but was acrimoniously chucked out in favor of... jimmy fucking carter.
