Guitar is probably the easiest instrument to play at a minimal level of competence, i.e. well enough to play songs you like adequately.

Getting really good at guitar has some big hurdles though. I mean I still don't think it's as hard to master as violin or trumpet or something, but there's a huge difference in the effort needed to get from beginner to knowing how to play the whole beatles catalog, vs getting from that to high level playing.

I agree with your first statement, disagree with your second.

High end guitar finger picking involves playing rhythm and lead simultaneously sort of like piano (albeit with much more restrictions in the notes available). With violin, you're never really doing more than simple chords and isolated notes. The technique is hard to master but once you get that to a high enough level the only axis you can really improve on is speed.

Yeah but a violin has a tiny neck with no frets, and bowing is harder than picking. Just mastering playing in tune with good intonation can take years and people who don't have the ear for it often never get there.

I still agree that there's a steep learning curve getting past the "beginner" level on guitar even though doing beginner shit is pretty easy.

yes and it won't take a year.

punk rock is based on power chords, two note pseudo chords that are all formed the exact same way.

you can probably learn to play any punk you want in six months at that schedule.

it's just laughably easy to move around on the neck of an electric guitar - acoustic you have to put way more pressure on to fret, usually, unless you have an excellent acoustic guitar + great technique so you can handle the fast action

i honestly don't understand the kind of person who thinks rhythmically strumming is hard on a guitar - i literally never once thought about it; it came innately and i assume anyone with any hope of ever becoming musical is the same

i mean it's like fucking genetics man, humans are rhythmic creatures just look at shitty african tribes that don't even have a written language, they can all bang shit out in rhythm

It will take you more than a few weeks to develop the finger strength and callouses and the muscle memory to do it seamlessly. Also depends on whether you've ever played any other instruments. A person with a musical background is going to pick it up very quickly.

Yeah I'd say a few months to get to where you "feel" like you can do it, and probably 6 mos to a year to get to where you can actually do it in time with a band.

its really all about getting your fingers in good shape, learning 5-6 chords and a few scales, how to do power chords (super easy), and learning how to strum in proper time. Later on you can begin to figure out IRL songs that you like.

If you put in an hour a day of legit practice, you will be very decent in one year.

that looks pretty TTT man. Don't want to go too shitty. Go to a pawn shop and buy a used Fender Squire or a cheap Ibanez and amp. I once saw an RG series Ibanes for $125 at a pawn shop (that is a steal). Xoxo is pretty good about guitar advice, come here with the model of amp and guitar and we will advise.

I'm a professional guitarist. You will never become good at guitar. You don't have the passion, you don't love music enough to really get inside it and to own it. Your heart will always be in other places. If you haven't been connected to music for a long time, you have no chance at mastery. Anyone can learn to strum a few chords. And if you really wanted to win at it, you could learn some more challenging lead parts. But none of the approaches described in this thread thus far are an accurate method to attaining mastery of music and the instrument. You should quit now before you embaress yourself. Thinking something is cool and imagining yourself as an accomplished artist in any field is a total mistake.

A fair number professional guitarists over 40 could do this if they're not folk only or something. It would take me a month of playing it to a metronome to get it up to speed. I could play it note for note but not with the same attitude. Similarly Eddie couldn't play my licks with the same attitude. If you're going purely for overall challenge, Yngwie is a lot harder imo. Also, memorizing another musicians licks does not make you great. You learn nothing by playing that riff alone. Music takes a lot more work than that.

This is generally true. Most people who play guitar don't understand the difference between being able to make your fingers do the mechanical minimum required to "play" a song and actually playing the song.

Anyone can get decent in that amount of time. Whether you get good or not depends on how many hours per day you play combined with how good of an ear you have (pitch recognition ear for what sounds right in a song rhythm ability to deconstruct chords in your head etc)

that's how I was when I was first learning -- one summer around like age 13 I started playing like three hours a day, just teaching myself out of songbooks. I got pretty good pretty fast although there were a LOT of flaws in my playing that I probably could have used someone to point out. Playing guitar is kind of like driving -- you're always amazing at it when you do it by yourself.

forgetting about technique, there was also stuff I figured out by ear where I just played something in a way harder way than it needed to be played, like if someone had told me "you know that's in open tuning, right?" I would have stopped coming up with crazy fingerings.

Read music or no? if no, possibly, although 1 hour a day is nothing.

If you have to learn music fundamentals, probably not.

Yeah, I think so, but only if one possessed above average musical talent to begin with. Otherwise, a year does not seem long enough to me. I have been playing the guitar for only a year and a half now, while I formerly was trained on the bass which included learning some music theory, so I hd a head start on the guitar. And yet I feel, after a year and a half, as though the more I learn the less I know. But I'm just now starting to be able to play the guitar a little bit and it's a very fun instrument that can be played in a variety of ways.
