Anyone have any experience with this? A reservist would have to do one weekend a month and two weeks a year of drilling. Basically all of their vacation time as a jr associate.

Do you think the firm would be okay with this? Easier to do as a first or second year than a fourth or fifth? You drill for 2 years then you stop the 2 week things. Trying to advise a buddy and I haven't the first clue, nobody at my firm does this that I am aware of but I'm sure its been done before.

Big firms will frown on an associate joining the reserves. They can't fire you for it under USERA, but they will find a way to get rid of you. Joining the reserves communicates your desire to not give your employer 100%, and they are quick to pick up on that.

Agreed. One guy at my firm pulled it off but he was full-time military before law school and joined reserves before going BIGLAW.

He also carefully selected a practice group with relatively more scheduling flexibility.

This. I know a guy who managed JAG reserve in NYC biglaw for a few years but he was passed over and is now inhouse. I do know a bunch of guys who manage both jag and regular reserve in DC biglaw

Doable but not great for either career. Many people considering this seem to underestimate the amount of crap that has to get done between drills.

True, though not mutually exclusive. Many times I have been back in the crappy near-base hotel logged into Citrix and running changes or filling in [CITE] blanks while the rest of the officers in the unit enjoy wardroom dinner.

Like 500 bucks a month and option for dat Tricare. really pretty trivial unless you were a doc reviewer and needed health insurance and the extra cash.
