I think this is basically true in 99% of cases. People who stay invariabley are assholes with no hobbies, or the types that can be easily manipulated into putting up with all that shit.

Anyone who values their life doesn't stay more than 5 years or even 3 years nowadays.

Truth niggas.

Well I have a very small sample size to work with. I only know 3 people personally and quite well that have made it to year 5 and beyond.

What all 3 have in common is they have the ability to put up with a ton of shit.

I've known a few married dudes with kids that last that long, and don't fit this description. I think they are mostly trying to avoid their family.

For single people, I think you are right.

I wonder about the 3 peeps I know. They are all at V20. One of them is in Litigation, and seems fairly happy, so I am not surprised he stays.

The other 2 are in Corporate and hate their lives. No idea why they haven't at least lateralled or gone in-house

Once you get to year five, there's no reason to quit. If you're not gunning for partner, you know you're on borrowed time anyway. Do the minimum amount of work to get your bonus, stop caring, and stick around until they kick you out. No stress, because you're expecting it eventually. At some firms, you can make it well past year 5 like that.

Being fired from biglaw is like death. There is a tremendous jump from a "good" exit job and what you can get after you are fired.

Biglaw is fine. You would work hard in whatever line of work you're in. Biglaw pays decent salary and can lead to more interesting things if so inclined. Don't tolerate awful personalities, demonstrate mastery and initiative and people will not really hassle you. Every business has customers that get undue respect and deference. People pointing the finger at biglaw need to look inside at themselves

If you are any good and accept the work, you will be up to your eyeballs in billables. No one will question your work.

Don't understand the jew comment - anyone who is going to have success in biglaw will be anal retentive and push for every advantage, jew or not.

Honestly the problem is trying to generalize "biglaw" as being one way or another. I've worked at three major firms, and my experience at each was markedly different (mostly for the better, fortunately). Also completely depends on the partners you're working for.

Your first point is certainly true, if for no other reason than that there's MFH Biglaw, and Non-MFH Biglaw, and those two things have surprisingly little in common.

Ultimately, your 2nd point is probably most important. Find a decent group of partners to work with and life will be ok.

As to the first part, what I've found is that the most important factor is the firm's core clients. Some clients will essentially accept what you send them with only minor changes, whereas others demand massive revisions on a very tight timeline. Working for decent partners can help when you have a difficult client, but your lifestyle is still going to suffer.

The thing is, I've working for enormous corporations that have fallen into the first category, and high net-worth individuals who have fallen into the second. There's no real way for a 2L to tell during interviews which firms have the easiest clients, but after you've been in the industry for a while, you start to figure it out.

Either mentally ill or too tied down to their jobs cause they have 2+ kids in a high COL and wife doesn't work. Mentally ill means addicted to work, can't think outside of the box, or thinks that the $$$ is the only thing that matters in life, or all of the above.

I know someone who just developed multiple sclerosis cause he was working so much in biglaw - pretty sure he is mentally ill though.
