If you have enough invested or depository assets they upgrade you to private client. Originally it was slightly more exclusive and started at 500K+, but lately they've offered to 250K+. Then you get special perks and a private banker and advisor. If you are in NYC, basically every branch has a CPC now. Its not as great as it sounds, but its nice just emailing people what you need. If you're biglaw over 4 years and saving its not hard, especially since your IRA assets can count (so convert the 401k when you leave).

Strangely income had little to do with my credit limit; much more to do with you repayment histories and other factors like I had lots of $ with them. Also paying off my loans made me look like a FICO star. And I never carry a balance.

Ya Im into them. I like the preferred sapphire bc there are no forex fees, and I take bout 4 vacations per year outside the us, so it saves me a lot of money. Also the mileage partners are good and most nice now is they have a point trnasfer program to amazon. it lets you make any amzon buy with points. I have 190k pts right now and its good for $1800 of amazon goods. so its like in a year i cn get a nice new lcd tv from amazon for free. its totally baked into the amazon wbsite, too, like Do you want to pay cash Or use xxx points off your rewards program kinda sweet.

i thought all biglaw firms offered private client accounts to associates (both my law firms offered citi private client). the $250k balance thing is ridic and nobody i know who made it to 4th-5th year would've been able to be private client w/o already having it under the law firm thing.

Ours didnt. Fair point on second part, I had a career before law with decent assets already in place. I dont think its ridic tho since they count retirement. A good fifth yr should have 100k in 401k, and once they leave it can be a managed ira at your bank. 100 to 200 savings beyond that aint out of line if ur smart, depending on loans.

Get the gold rewards amex, 175 a year but first yr free and well worth it if you put your airline purchases on there.

With somewhat frugal spending, I've been able to take four international biz class flights over the last 2 years at no cost aside from misc fees (<$100 aggregate). And I still have abt 300k frequent flyer pts to burn.

Amex is easy. Spend 500-1000 for 2-3 months and quickly pay the balance off each month. Then ask for an upgrade to gold rewards. Tell them.you're interested but unsure abt the cost. They will give you a fee free year or toss you 5k+ points. Take the fee free year.

sapphire preferred isn't free. it's 95 a year but the first year fee is waived.

Yea ur right, my bad. But its certainly the most versatile rewards card out there right now. Well worth the cost. Interestingly I wonder if I was charged the annual fee last year...havent seen any charge on the card

Also some issuers will look at your total outstanding credit limits. So they see 15K or so of credit line anyhow. Why don't you cancel a bunch. You'll get a better limit after a while and then you can accumulate points, like the doods in this thread are saying. Sapphire preferred is great.

i'm pretty sure the more cards you have open that aren't delinquent, the more credit history you have and the better your credit rating is.

i have maybe 15-20 cards open (can't keep track of all the times i've opened a saks/bloomies etc account to get extra 15% off or opened a card just to do a 0% apr balance transfer) and i never end up closing any of them. my credit score is 803.

They all have their secret formulas to determine credit line max on a single card, which is the topic I thought is this thread. Fico is a factor and the better it is the higher youll get likely, but like i said some issuers will look at your max exposure by adding up all your possible extensions. If you cancel lots of smaller cards you dont need anyhow, youll open yourself up for a bigger max credit line on a single card.

id agree with you lots of cards may help build fico and wont hurt it

10K on Citi Forward. Could make it higher if I asked Chase to consolidate two of my cards (Chase Sapphire Preferred and United Explorer, the latter of which I just got for the 55k mile sign-up bonus and will cancel when the first annual fee is due).

Also have the Amex Premier Gold Card at no pre-set limit (also got this just for the 50k sign-up bonus and will probably cancel it when they charge an annual fee, since $175 is pretty steep).

From what I have read, Student Loans do NOT hurt your credit score at all (as long as you are paid up to date). In fact, they up your score. Such loans are not factored into your debt to credit ratio.

I know paying off a car loan helps.
