Christ you guys are dull. First, you don't mark-to-market $1B of physical gold. The shit is not held for trading. This is a 20+ year bet. Second, we are dealing with an endowment fund which have the longest time horizons out there. If Yale's fund buys farmland in Chile, do you think they would be sweating a 15% drop in land prices?

Timing is not really as important with longer term investments. Would it have been better if they bought at 500? Sure. But that is hardly responsive to my post nor is a valid criticism.

I said timing is "not really as important", not that it is irrelevant you dipshit. It is a truism that if you buy at the top then you lose.

The key is that, relative to short time horizons, entry point tends to not be as important. Which is pretty much widely accepted.

I merely pointed out that the same could be said of bonds. Yes, there are unqiue characteristics for both bonds and gold, that is not responsive.

no, technical analysis is generally more concerned with identifying a short term trend and money making opportunity. no one can see 20+ years into the future, and in light of that, given the choice between investing in gold or stocks and real estate, there is no rational basis for investing 1 billion dollars into gold. i never claimed that it is automatically a wise decision to put that money into stocks/real estate (though i think it is). simply that, in lieu of any mystical powers to see into the future, the evidence suggests that the past has been, at the very least, a better guide than anything else out there.

technical analysis is looking at charts

you are looking at charts

you have simplified this question into something it may not be and writing with a certainty you don't deserve to have

with your brilliant analysis, you have concluded that stocks and real estate are always a superior long term investment to gold, but are not always a wise investment themselves. the first conclusion is nonsense and the second conclusion is correct, but only serves to exacerbate the stupidity of the first.

gold can be undervalued

gold can appreciate in value

gold can be a hedge

gold has advantages over real estate and stocks

you are putting words into my mouth again and you don't need to look at charts to know what even many novice investors understand. gold can be this and gold can be that and yet gold cannot even be proven to be better at what it's main claim to fame is supposed to be (a hedge against inflation) than stocks or real estate. so again, i ask, what is the rationale for placing that large of a bet on gold, especially with that long of a time horizon? there is none.

public institutions should really be limited to index funds and other various very low-risk things (eg AAA gov't debt). gold actually has a pretty good track record over time, but pensions getting ttt hedge funds and losing their money just creates problems for everyone.

I agree with your first sentence. Except for a few exceptions, my impression is that ppl jump into the hot vehicles like PE/HF and really just fork over tons in fees without out-performing the market. I was surprised to find out that you're right about gold as an investment (caution: this quora guy may be way off in his analysis):

while that is a little misleading, you can see it in more recent terms. in 1979 gold traded at $800 an ounce. almost 35 years later it trades below $1200 an ounce. that's less than a 50% rise in almost 35 years.

Right but 1979 is arbitrary. August 1971 is when the gold/dollar ties were severed so you need to base your starting point there.

Not sure why CGM is arguing with libs ITT. Physical gold isn't meant to be the best investment and will never beat the S&P long term, except in one scenario. It provides an average to bad return in good times and an extraordinary one in the event civilization truly hits the fan. That's it.

Even the "end of civilization" thing is massive flame. If society crumbles (incredibly unlikely paultard dream), no one is going to use gold as a fiat. people would simply trade guns, ammo, food, water, and medical supplies.

In summary - the fiat tide is now going out. And among those who will first be observed swimming naked are the very same people whose fate has been so very intrinsically linked to the perpetuation of a flawed regime (and who coined this very saying). In the meantime, hold on to your hats: should a scramble for delivery ensue, the recent parabolic move in various precious metals will seem like a dress rehearsal for what is about to transpire. Lol at a fucking large American university -- charging probably $50K/year and getting probably 90% of its revenue directly from the federal gov't -- going all-in on an investment that only, in the most fedora-wearingest neckbeard's wet dream, would ever possibly make sense as a hedge against hyperinflation.

Another problem with gold is that if and when it jumps to $5000 due to a currency crisis, do you really want to exchange it for dollars? It’s only real investment value is the premium people will pay for it during a scare that doesn’t result in a collapse. Otherwise it’s just the opposite of cash, except you have to pay a commission every time you buy and sell it.
