The equity partner that heads the group I would be joining was all enthusiastic and shit. Talked about how impressive I was and what a great fit I would be.

I've interviewed with 4 firms.
One outright dinged me (expected it, it was a completely different practice from what I'm doing now).
Two were like, "Yeah bro, we like you, but we've just started looking so we're going to see what else is out there, let us know if you get an offer before we're done and we might counteroffer."
Then the fourth one has made me do three fucking interviews. At this point I've met every attorney in the group, and several random equity partners outside of the group. It's going to be great when they ding me or pull the same shit the other firms did. "Weellll we're going to keep looking, but let us know if you need an answer anytime soon."

I heard back from my recruiter Thursday last week. They want me to do a fourth interview...this time with just one partner.
I provided my availability and haven't heard back yet. Annoyed for several reasons.
1. Four interviews? Seriously? What the fuck. 2. It should not take 3+ days to figure out when a single person's schedule matches up with one other person's schedule.
I'm not sure if this inefficiency is the fault of the recruiter or the firm, but either way, it's frustrating. |

They fucked me. Sometime in the middle of all the interviewing (I think between 3rd and 4th interview) the executive committee decided to put a hiring freeze in place. The partners in the group that were interviewing me thought they would be exempt because they had already received approval to hire.
They were wrong.
They then submitted a bunch of shit to have the hire approved despite the freeze.
It was denied.
The whole time they kept telling me an offer was coming...until it wasn't. Lost about a month and a half of time where I should have been applying for other jobs.
They fucked me so bad. They didn't even call me and apologize or anything...it was just like, "lol whoops, we can't give you an offer right now." |

I got pissed off about the law firm fucking me so I applied to a bunch of non-legal positions (without a recruiter). One of them was a consulting firm and they had me do an interview. Nailed the interview and they gave me an offer on Friday. The salary is good, but it's still like 40k less than biglol associate. Today I countered them asking for 20k more.
The EVP said he would talk to the other senior peeps and get back to me tomorrow.
If they go up, goodbye law. |

Advancement options are pretty good. Their senior people are compensated similar to biglaw senior people and the top people make biglaw partner pay. One thing that appeals to me about it is they're willing to jump people ahead if they're high performers.
I also feel pretty positive about exit options. Healthcare consulting seems like a pretty solid field, and if I want to go back into law, I could always shoot for an in-house gig at a hospital or university. |

I worked for a year in healthcare before becoming a lawyer.
I went to a T6.
My law firm work doesn't really relate and it's not a fancy firm. I think at best it just made them feel comfortable because, hey, someone else already paid me a ton of money to do shit and hasn't fired me.
I think they were mainly interested because of my academic credentials and my prior exposure to the field. Then I just destroyed the interview.
