The topic is about lawyer jobs making less than 100k. From my experience most private sector non biglaw jobs are just as bad if not worse than biglaw. Of course not talking about jobs in general.

lol and apparently there are people who take out loans to pay for schooling! Can you believe that there are people out there who don't even have enough family money to pay for an education. It explains why they are always up in arms over student loan interest rates.

he actually does pick up clients through the landscaping network.

sad thing is he's a good dood and went to a good undergrad with me. not the sharpest knife in the drawer (probable URM bump) but not objectively dumb. he was one of those guys who really loved and respected his parents for all the menial labor they did to provide for him and his siblings - better opportunities and all that jazz. and it was really important for him to rise beyond his parents' lot in life and justify all of the sacrifices they made. dreamed of being a biglawyer, rising to partner, taking care of his family. Once he got that 150s LSAT I tried to discourage him from law school but he wouldn't hear it. Paid $$$ for a legit TTT and got nojerb prospects pwnd. Wife and two kids and basically lives in his childhood neighborhood again.

No. This dude is a boomer. He's my friend's dad. He apparently worked on wall street for like 2 yrs out of kellogg but hated it and had a nervous breakdown so he started his own pool cleaning company and delivers newspapers at like 4 am to subsidize his income. He's been doing it for like 20+ years now. I would guess he makes like $80k a year between the two jobs.

I work for a three attorney divorce firm. This year I will make $75k plus bonus.

I bill between 100-120 hours most months, which includes a decent amount of time doing networking (10 hours a month or so) and CLE related functions (taking them as well as preparing CLE materials for the partner to lecture on). It also includes nonbillable time if for example we are not double billing a client for a meeting both the partner and I attend.

I'm a third year and have done several depositions and minor hearings as well as made oral arguments regarding motions. I settle most of my cases directly with opposing counsel and have almost complete authority over my cases from start to finish.

I'd much rather be doing this than practicing in a big firm environment.

Compared to BL that's some good experience. I'll be doing that immediately upon getting sworn in. Twist, i have no billables or any type of requirement.

I agree with you though, much better than BL life

Great experience. I don't have a billables requirement. I simply do what I need to do. Getting deposition and trial experience is so important to developing the skills to run your own practice or partner up at some point. Good luck.

Exactly. And there's nothing better than not charging your clients. I sleep very well at night knowing nobody has to pay me to bring a case.

Good luck to you as well.

your 2nd paragraph is a mess

networking and cle related shit is not billable.

nor is nonbillable billable. you know this, yet you cite to it as part of your billable time.

you should know, as a 3rd yr practicing attorney, that no one around here would refer to that crap as billable hours

he means record. he records 100 to 120 which includes nonbillables. in other words, his billables are less than 100 which is chill as fuck.

When people get sworn in, do they have to sign something acknowledging they are only attorneys after making > $100k? Just curious

More so, I am commenting on all the people trying to say that they are glad they aren't in biglaw or something more lucrative because they get to be in charge of a divorce case.

maybe, although I am guessing a lot of these jobs they speak of don't have particularly short hours.

Since you might be referring to me. For most of my colleagues at other similar firms and myself, we are out of the office by 6 almost every night except a handful throughout the year. The hours are not bad at all. Maybe in midlaw or some complete shithole firm.

I see. I think you've misinterpreted the comments of a few. It seems to some that making less than Biglaw now is cr for them because they gain more early experience and don't suffer through the BigLaw shit QOL. That experience will translate (possibly) into BigLaw or higher salary AND offer autonomy in the relative short term.

Side by side, in 3 years, that poaster above has done stuff that would take a BL associate 5-8 years to achieve. No argument on the pay scale, but that's not always the biggest factor (unless it's all you have to boast about)

Oddly enough, copping a BigLaw gig isn't what every person wants to do.

I could train a high school dood to do my job. 90k, flexible 40 hour week. Older doods are over 200k (considerably more with various bonuses etc) and there's not a lot of young blood gunning for those spots.

Yup, not unhappy I missed BIGLAW, which I'd have flamed the fuck out of anyhow.

if you're a private practice lawyer who can't make $100k+/yr within 5 years of law school graduation, you are a loser.
